Fort MacArthur Museum

Fort MacArthur Museum in San Pedro preserves the history of the U.S.

Fort MacArthur Museum in San Pedro preserves the history of the U.S. Army post that guarded Los Angeles Harbor from 1914 to 1974. Exhibits cover coastal defense, wartime life in Southern California, Civil Defense and military campaigns in the Pacific. Volunteer-led tours take you through the fort’s compartments, hallways and underground walkways, with guides explaining how the site worked. The grounds also have coastal views, green space and Battery Farley’s small gift shop. The museum is open Friday and Saturday afternoons; check tour times before you go.

A post guarding Los Angeles Harbor

Fort MacArthur Museum

Fort MacArthur was commissioned in 1888 under President Grover Cleveland. It remained in active use from 1914 to 1974 as an Army post protecting Los Angeles Harbor. Large gun batteries once defended the coastline; the guns were retired in 1948, after the Second World War.

The museum, established in 1985, preserves and interprets the fort’s history. Its exhibits trace the harbor’s defenses and Los Angeles’s role as a military port for both the Army and the Navy. They also cover early American air defenses and military campaigns in the Pacific Theater.

Inside the galleries, displays connect military operations with life beyond the post. Look for material on home-front activities in the greater Los Angeles area during the World Wars and on Civil Defense. Together, these subjects show how the harbor’s military role extended into the surrounding region.

Guided visits include the fort’s compartments, pole barns, hallways and underground walkways. Volunteer guides explain the site and its history as you move through these spaces. The museum’s exhibits and the fort itself provide different ways to understand the former artillery base: one follows the events and defenses, the other takes you through the structure.

Planning a visit

The museum is at Battery Osgood-Farley in San Pedro and is open to visitors on Friday and Saturday afternoons. Tour schedules can affect how much of the fort you see, so check the current schedule before setting out. One Saturday tour described in the gathered material lasted about an hour; time for the exhibits and grounds adds to that visit.

The grounds have coastal views and green space. Battery Farley has a small gift shop. Parking at the museum may be limited; the Korean Bell is suggested as another place to park nearby. Donations help support preservation of the museum.
