The USS Iowa is moored at Berth 87 in San Pedro, near the World Cruise Terminal. Commissioned in 1943, the ship served during World War II and the Korean War, and remained in Navy service during the Cold War. It was the lead ship of its class and hosted US presidents including Franklin D. Roosevelt, Ronald Reagan and George H. W. Bush, giving it the nickname “Battleship of Presidents.”

The Iowa has been open as a museum since 2011. Its decks and interior spaces let you see the scale of a battleship and get a sense of the work and routines of the sailors who served aboard.

Admission includes a self-guided tour, marked by yellow arrows around the ship. The route passes weapons and gun turrets, staterooms, crew quarters and the mess hall. A downloadable USS Iowa app can add information as you explore. Exhibits include the ship’s mascot, Vicky the Dog, and displays about maritime and naval history.

The ship’s interior has steep stairs, low doorways and protruding fittings. Take your time as you move between spaces, and watch your head. Comfortable walking shoes are useful for the route.

Family activities and special tours

Children can follow a scavenger hunt as part of the regular visit. The ship also has a flight simulator and exhibits that connect naval history with science and technology.

Some areas are not part of the standard route. Access to special tours, including a visit to Roosevelt’s room and a propulsion tour, requires advance booking and scheduling. Check the museum’s official website for current tour details before travelling to San Pedro.

The ship’s service and legacy

The Iowa’s story spans more than one conflict. It served in World War II and the Korean War, and continued in the Navy during the Cold War. Its size and preserved spaces provide a close look at a vessel built for naval service, while the crew areas show where sailors worked and lived aboard.

The museum shop also sells items made from pieces of actual Iowa decking, including engraved planks and smaller keepsakes. Proceeds support the Battleship Iowa’s ongoing work.
