Polihale State Park

Polihale State Park is a remote beach park on Kauaʻi’s west coast, at the end of Highway 50.

Polihale State Park is a remote beach park on Kauaʻi’s west coast, at the end of Highway 50. Its long sandy shore, tall dunes and views toward the Nā Pali Coast make the slow drive worthwhile for a beach walk, picnic or sunset. The access road is rough and unpaved, so plan for a careful drive and bring food, water and beach supplies. Strong currents make swimming and snorkeling unsafe here; enjoy the ocean from shore instead.

The beach and its setting

Polihale lies on Kauaʻi’s western shore, where the island’s road ends near the beginning of the Nā Pali Coast. The park is known for its exceptionally long beach and high sand dunes. From the northern end of the shore, you can see the cliffs of the Nā Pali Coast; the open ocean and distant island of Niʻihau are also part of the west-facing view.

The wide shoreline leaves room for walking, beachcombing, picnicking and relaxing on the sand. The beach is exposed to strong ocean currents, so swimming and snorkeling are not safe choices. Treat the water as something to watch from shore, and take care around the waves.

Getting there and planning your visit

The approach follows a rough, unpaved road from the end of Highway 50. Potholes, bumps and stretches of sand can make the drive slow; four-wheel drive is recommended. Allow time for the road in both directions, and check whether your rental agreement permits travel on unpaved roads. Avoid driving onto the beach unless you are confident in your vehicle’s off-road capabilities.

Facilities are limited, so bring the supplies you need for the day, including water, food, sunscreen and beach gear. Sunset is a popular time to visit for the view across the Pacific. Overnight camping is possible with a permit; arrange the permit before you go.
