Maricopa Point

Maricopa Point is a South Rim overlook on Hermit Road in Grand Canyon National Park.

Maricopa Point is a South Rim overlook on Hermit Road in Grand Canyon National Park. A short walk on a paved path leads to broad views across the canyon, with mesas and, on clear days, glimpses of the Colorado River below. Look west for the abandoned Orphan Mine, whose shaft and old cable lines remain visible against the rim. The point is also a quieter place to pause for photos and take in the canyon’s changing colors without setting out on a longer hike.

The view from the rim

Maricopa Point
Maricopa Point

Maricopa Point looks across the Grand Canyon toward a broad spread of mesas and canyon walls. The viewpoint projects toward the canyon, giving you an expansive perspective from the South Rim. On a clear day, parts of the Colorado River can be visible far below, though the river is difficult to make out from here.

The light changes the colors and layers of the canyon through the day. The overlook is also a useful stop for photographs, with views that do not require walking close to the cliff edge.

The Orphan Mine

The former Orphan Mine sits to the west of the viewpoint. Look for the mine shaft and the cable lines that once ran up toward the rim. The mine claim dates to 1891, when miner Dan Hogan claimed the Orphan Lode. Work began with copper; uranium was later mined there, and operations ended in 1969.

The mine gives the view a visible link to the area’s mining history. Take time to locate the old workings before continuing along the rim.

Walking and reaching the point

Maricopa Point is reached by a short walk from the Hermit Road shuttle stop on a paved path. It also lies along the Rim Trail, where the route continues toward other South Rim viewpoints. Powell Point is about 0.5 miles west, while Trailview Overlook is about 0.7 miles east; the surfaces differ along the way, with the route toward Powell Point becoming dirt.

Westbound Red buses stop at Maricopa Point. Shuttle routes and schedules can change, so check the National Park Service’s Hermit Road information before setting out. From December through February, private vehicles can use Hermit Road, although winter ice and snow can make driving hazardous and sometimes lead to road closures.
