Set on the shore of Lake Osceola at 633 Osceola Ave in Winter Park, the Albin Polasek Museum & Sculpture Gardens brings together a historic home, indoor galleries and outdoor art. The former residence and studio of Czech-born sculptor Albin Polasek holds works that trace his life and career, alongside rotating exhibitions. Outside, paths wind past classical figures and playful mythological sculptures through three acres of gardens. Guided tours add context to the home and chapel; leave time to explore the lakeside grounds at your own pace.

A sculptor’s home and collection

The museum occupies the former Winter Park residence and studio of Albin Polasek, a Czech-born sculptor who lived there from 1950 until his death in 1965. Born in 1879 in what is now the Czech Republic, he emigrated to the United States in his early twenties and built a long career in sculpture. He also led the sculpture department at the Art Institute of Chicago.

Founded in 1961, the museum preserves Polasek’s work and story. Its collection includes more than 200 works by the artist, as well as pieces by other American artists. The focus is on American representational sculpture, and rotating exhibitions bring additional work into the galleries.

Sculpture among the gardens

The grounds cover three acres along Lake Osceola. Paths cross lawns and flower beds, with tropical foliage and native Florida and subtropical plants around the sculptures. The outdoor collection includes classical, life-size figures and works with mythological subjects, set among the garden rather than confined to a gallery.

Polasek created more than 400 works over his career. The museum displays many of them indoors and outside; the garden gives visitors a chance to encounter sculpture in an open-air setting, with views across the lake. Take the paths at an easy pace and allow time to pause at pieces that catch your eye.

The residence, chapel and historic houses

Tours cover Polasek’s historic residence and private chapel, as well as the art and spaces associated with his life. The home is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. A guided visit can help connect the works on display with the artist’s career and the place where he settled after retiring to Winter Park.

The museum grounds also include the historic Capen-Showalter House. The original Capen House was moved to the site in two halves, floated down Lake Osceola. Together, the house, galleries, chapel and garden make the visit a mix of architecture, art and outdoor walking.

Planning a visit

The museum is at 633 Osceola Ave in Winter Park. It is closed on Mondays; it opens at 10 a.m. Tuesday through Saturday and at 1 p.m. on Sunday. Tickets in advance are recommended, and the museum offers guided tours. If you prefer to explore without a longer explanation, allow time to walk through the galleries and garden at your own pace.

The grounds and galleries are compact enough for a relatively short visit, though the lakeside setting makes it easy to linger. Winter is a useful season to plan an outdoor walk in Florida’s milder weather. The museum also hosts cultural events, including the Winter Park Paint Out in spring and a Chamber Concert Series in winter.
