Baltimore’s Washington Monument is a 178-foot marble column in Mount Vernon Place, an important landmark and gathering space in the city’s historic Mount Vernon neighborhood. Designed by Robert Mills, it predates his better-known monument in Washington, D.C. The surrounding squares, classic architecture and spring blossoms make a walk through the neighborhood part of the visit too.

Washington Monument

Baltimore’s Washington Monument stands in the center of Mount Vernon Place, where four green spaces extend from the monument in the cardinal directions. The column is 178 feet tall and made of marble, with a statue of George Washington at its summit. The surrounding squares remain a gathering place in the neighborhood.

Architect Robert Mills won a design competition for the monument in 1814. Construction began the following year. It was among the first major monuments dedicated to Washington and came before the monument in Washington, D.C. Mills later designed that better-known column as well.

A free gallery introduces the monument’s history and George Washington’s legacy. Exhibits also cover restoration work on the structure. It gives you a way to explore the site without climbing the column.

The ascent is by a narrow interior staircase. At the top, the view takes in Baltimore’s skyline and the surrounding Mount Vernon neighborhood. The climb is not suited to everyone: the staircase can feel airless, so take that into account if enclosed spaces are uncomfortable for you.

A walk around the squares

Allow time to walk through Mount Vernon Place after visiting the monument. The neighborhood developed around it as an elite residential district, and its historic architecture gives the streets and squares a distinct setting. Peabody Library and the Walters Art Museum are nearby, making it possible to add another cultural stop to your day.

The squares host seasonal events, including Flower Mart, live music and outdoor yoga. Cherry and magnolia blossoms are a draw in spring; the monument is also the focus of a holiday lighting celebration with fireworks and concerts.
