In breve

Stay in Haad Rin for the Full Moon Party and nightlife, in Thong Sala for ferries and practicality, on Haad Yao for a long sunset beach, in Thong Nai Pan for calm bays and resorts, and in Sri Thanu for yoga and slow stays. Roads are steep, so transfer time matters more than distance on the map.

How to choose

Ko Pha-Ngan is a hilly island with a long coastline and few roads, so where you sleep decides your beach, your evenings and how long you spend in a songthaew. The Ko Pha-Ngan travel guide covers the island at a glance; this page settles where to base yourself, and how that fits a wider Thailand trip. The main question is whether you want the party side or the calm side.

The island is not large, but it feels bigger because of the terrain. Roads between the main areas are steep and winding, and some beaches are reached only by boat or a rough trail. A beach that looks close on a map can mean a 40 minute ride, and that matters most when you arrive with luggage or leave for an early ferry. Think of the island as five different places and pick one.

Three things decide the choice. The first is the Full Moon Party, which turns Haad Rin into a crowd of thousands around each full moon and affects rooms and prices for days on either side. The second is the beach itself: Haad Rin has two beaches within walking distance, Haad Yao is long and gentle, Thong Nai Pan is a pair of calm bays and Sri Thanu is quiet. The third is how you move around. If you do not plan to ride a scooter, choose a base with restaurants within walking distance, because evening taxis cost more.

Price bands below are per night for a double room: $ is a simple guesthouse or fan bungalow, $$ is a mid-range bungalow or hotel, $$$ is a resort. Rates swing between the dry months, the party weeks and the wettest months, so treat the bands as a guide and check current prices at booking. For the party itself, read the Full Moon Party guide.

1. Haad Rin

Parties, short stays
From the pier
About 30 min
Beach
Sunrise and Sunset beaches

Haad Rin sits on a narrow peninsula at the southeast tip, with Sunrise Beach on one side and a small, quieter beach on the other. It is the home of the Full Moon Party, and in the weeks around the full moon it is crowded, loud and busy until dawn. At other times it is a lively backpacker area with bars, hostels, shops and restaurants, all within walking distance.

It suits party-goers, short stays and travelers who like being in the middle of things. A bungalow or small hotel near the quieter beach gives you a little distance from the noise, and the beaches are easy to reach on foot. A songthaew or boat connects Haad Rin to Thong Sala in about half an hour, depending on traffic.

The compromise is sleep. Around the full moon, music can run until morning, prices rise and rooms can be booked out well before the date. If you want quiet nights, look at the north or west coast instead.

Evita se you want quiet nights or a calm beach for children. Thong Nai Pan or Haad Yao suits you better.

2. Thong Sala

$–$$

Thong Sala is the island's main town and ferry hub. The pier, supermarkets, ATMs, pharmacies, a night market and the taxi stand are all here. It is the practical choice for an arrival night, an early departure or a stop between ferries, and it is where most rental scooters and taxis start.

Guesthouses and small hotels are cheaper than at the beach resorts, and the town works as a base if you plan to move around by taxi. The beaches nearby are ordinary rather than special, so most visitors treat Thong Sala as a gateway and sleep elsewhere after a night or two.

The trade-off is atmosphere. It is a working town with traffic and no beach to speak of, which makes it a poor choice for a long stay. If you want a beach and a village, look at Haad Yao or Sri Thanu.

Evita se you want a beautiful beach on your doorstep. Haad Yao or Thong Nai Pan suits you better.

3. Haad Yao

Best for
Sunsets, families
From the pier
About 25–30 min
Beach
Long west-coast beach
Price band
$$

Haad Yao is a long, gently sloping beach on the west coast, with bungalows, restaurants, dive centers and a few shops along the sand. Sunsets are the draw, and the pace is relaxed during the day with a moderate evening scene. It suits couples, families and travelers who want a proper beach and enough facilities to avoid taxis every night.

The beach is wide and has good swimming in the dry months. Because it faces west, sunsets arrive without the party noise of Haad Rin. A short drive takes you to Sri Thanu and, further, to Thong Sala. Check which end of the beach your room is on, since the road at both ends is steep.

The trade-off is access. The ride to the pier takes about half an hour and some roads are steep and wet, so arrival with heavy bags is tiring. In the wettest months, waves and rip currents can make swimming unsafe, so follow local advice and flags.

Evita se you want to walk to bars or you dislike steep roads. Haad Rin or Thong Sala suits you better.

4. Thong Nai Pan

Best for
Calm bays, couples
From the pier
About 40–50 min
Beach
Two calm northeast bays
Price band
$$$

Thong Nai Pan is a pair of calm bays on the northeast coast, Thong Nai Pan Yai and Thong Nai Pan Noi, with resorts, boutique stays and a few restaurants. The water is calmer than at Haad Rin, the setting is scenic, and the pace is slow. It suits honeymooners, couples and anyone who wants a quiet beach with a bit of comfort.

Stays lean toward upscale bungalows and resorts, with fewer budget options than on the west coast. The area is a good base for boat trips along the north coast, and for visiting smaller beaches such as Bottle Beach by boat. It feels remote, which is the point.

The trade-off is the road. The route from Thong Sala is steep and winding, and some stretches are rough, so transfers can take 40 to 50 minutes, and boat transfers depend on conditions. Check how your accommodation arranges pickups before you book, and avoid late arrivals in bad weather.

Evita se you want cheap rooms or late-night options. Haad Rin or Thong Sala suits you better.

5. Sri Thanu

Best for
Yoga, long stays
From the pier
About 25 min
Beach
Quiet west-coast beach
Price band
$$

Sri Thanu, on the west coast, is known for yoga studios, wellness retreats and cafes, with a quiet beach and a slow pace. It suits long stays, remote workers, yoga students and travelers who want healthy food and a relaxed community. Moon-party nights are a taxi ride away, not on the doorstep.

Accommodation ranges from simple bungalows to retreat-style stays, and many places offer weekly or monthly rates. Classes and workshops are common in the dry months. The beach is calmer than at Haad Rin, and sunsets are good.

The trade-off is nightlife. Evenings are quiet and options are limited, so you may eat at your guesthouse or take a taxi to Haad Yao or Thong Sala. If you want a lively base, choose Haad Rin.

Evita se you want nightlife on the doorstep. Haad Rin suits you better.

Stay here if yoga and a quiet beach beat nightlife and you will taxi to dinner.

Splitting your stay between two bases

For five nights or more, two bases can work better than one. A common split is two nights in Haad Rin or Thong Sala for the party and arrivals, then three nights at Haad Yao, Thong Nai Pan or Sri Thanu for a slower finish. That gives you two moods without long drives, because songthaews and boats link the coasts.

Moving costs a morning, so keep it to one move. Check-out is usually mid-morning and check-in mid-afternoon, which leaves a gap that is easy to fill with a swim or a stop at a market. Ask your first accommodation to hold your bags and arrange a taxi, since prices and availability vary by time of day and by the Full Moon Party dates.

Accommodation types vary by area. Haad Rin has hostels and mid-range bungalows, Thong Sala has town guesthouses, Haad Yao has beachfront bungalows, Thong Nai Pan has resorts and Sri Thanu has retreat-style stays. If you plan to take yoga classes or work remotely, ask about Wi-Fi and weekly rates before you compare nightly prices.

Booking tips

Book early for the Full Moon Party weeks, Christmas, New Year and the dry months from about January to April. The wettest months are generally October to December, when choice is wider and prices lower, but ferries are more often delayed and some places close. Keep a spare day before any flight, and read our guide to getting around Thailand for ferry options.

Ask about transfers when you book. Some accommodations offer pickups from the pier, and some charge for them, and the cost depends on the coast. Add an eSIM before you land, because signal drops in the hills and you will want maps and messages working at the pier.

Remember the arrival rules too. Thailand's visa-exempt stay and the arrival card are covered in our Thailand entry rules guide, and they apply before you ever reach the ferry.

Compare cover in our guide to travel insurance.

Domande frequenti

Where is the best place to stay on Ko Pha-Ngan?

Haad Rin if you want the Full Moon Party and nightlife, Haad Yao or Thong Nai Pan for beaches and calm, and Sri Thanu for yoga and wellness. Thong Sala is the practical choice for early ferries and one-night stops.

Where should you stay for the Full Moon Party?

Haad Rin is the walkable choice, but rooms fill days in advance and noise lasts until morning. If you want to sleep, stay on the west or north coast and take a taxi or boat to the beach.

Which Ko Pha-Ngan beach is best for a quiet stay?

Thong Nai Pan on the northeast and Sri Thanu on the west are the quietest bases with real facilities. Smaller bays such as Bottle Beach are quieter still, but reached by boat or a steep trail.

Is Thong Sala a good place to stay?

It is practical, not scenic. The pier, shops, ATMs and a night market are on foot, but the nearby beaches are ordinary. Use it for arrival nights or early departures.

Do you need a scooter on Ko Pha-Ngan?

No. Songthaew taxis and boats reach most beaches, though they cost more. Roads are steep and often wet, and many travelers are injured on scooters, so only ride if you are experienced and covered by insurance.

When should you book Ko Pha-Ngan accommodation?

Book early for the Full Moon Party weeks, Christmas, New Year and the dry months from about January to April. The wettest months are generally October to December, when choice is wider and prices lower.
