In breve

The Full Moon Party is a monthly beach party at Haad Rin on Ko Pha-Ngan, held around each full moon, so the date moves every month. Book rooms early, sleep at Haad Rin or arrange a late taxi home, keep valuables and drinks under control, and avoid scooters at night. If you want quiet, stay on the north or west coast and skip it.

What the Full Moon Party is

The Full Moon Party is a monthly beach party at Haad Rin on Ko Pha-Ngan, held around each full moon, with music stages, bars, buckets of cocktails and body paint on the sand. It draws thousands of visitors, and it has run for decades. If you only know one thing about Ko Pha-Ngan, it is probably this. Whether it suits you depends on how you feel about crowds, loud music and a long night.

The party is concentrated on Sunrise Beach at Haad Rin, at the southeast of the island, and surrounding streets fill with food stalls, bars and shops. The rest of the island is calm that night, which is why many visitors choose to sleep elsewhere and treat the party as a single evening out. Plan the party as a night, and plan the island around it, using our guide to where to stay on Ko Pha-Ngan.

Smaller parties happen around other moon phases, and schedules, venues and names change from year to year. Check local listings and your accommodation for what is on during your stay. For the wider trip, see our Thailand guide.

When is it? How to check the date

The date moves with the lunar calendar, so there is no fixed day each month. Check a moon calendar for the full moon date of your stay, then confirm with your accommodation or local listings, because organizers sometimes move the party a day or two for religious holidays or other events. Do this a few weeks before you book, not on the day.

Dates also affect prices and room availability. In the days before and after the party, rooms in Haad Rin and nearby beaches sell out, and prices rise. Dates around Christmas, New Year and other holidays are even busier. Our best time to visit Thailand page covers seasons, and the Gulf is generally driest from about February to April and in the mid-year months, while October to December brings the heaviest rain.

If you want the party and good weather, aim for the dry months. If you want the party at a lower price, the rainy months are cheaper, but ferries are slower and some places close.

Where to sleep for the party

There are three realistic choices. Sleeping in Haad Rin means you can walk home, but rooms are expensive and sell out early, and noise lasts until morning. Sleeping on another coast, such as Haad Yao, Sri Thanu or Thong Nai Pan, means a calm room, but you need a taxi or boat at night, and drivers charge more on party nights. Sleeping in Thong Sala is a practical middle ground, with a pier, shops and taxis, but the beaches are ordinary.

If you want to sleep, choose a room away from the party and book a return ride before you go out. If you want to party until sunrise and sleep through the day, choose Haad Rin and ask about earplugs and air conditioning. Whichever you choose, book early and read the cancellation terms.

Staying safe at the party

Most problems at the party come from alcohol, not from the crowd. Drinks are strong and cheap, buckets hide how much you have had, and swimming after drinking is dangerous. Stay with friends, drink water, eat first and agree a meeting point and a plan for getting home. If you feel unwell, leave early.

Protect your belongings. Leave passports, spare cash and valuables at your room, bring a small amount of cash and one card, and use a phone case you can hold. Thefts happen in crowds, and spiked or switched drinks have been reported at big events, so keep your drink in your hand and avoid accepting open drinks from strangers. Wear closed shoes if you can, because broken glass and trash fill the sand.

Thailand has strict drug laws, and police checks happen around the party. Do not buy or carry drugs, and check current rules and your embassy's advice before you travel. Our guide to travel insurance explains what cover usually excludes, and many policies do not pay out for incidents linked to drugs or heavy drinking.

Finally, avoid scooters. Roads are steep, dark and crowded on party nights, and crashes are one of the most common injuries on the island. Use a taxi or boat, and check that your insurance does not exclude party nights or motorbike use without a proper license.

Getting there and back

Ferries run to Ko Pha-Ngan from Ko Samui, Ko Tao and the mainland, and no airport exists on the island. Most visitors fly to Samui or Surat Thani and take a ferry to Thong Sala, then a songthaew or taxi to Haad Rin. Ferries are busy before the party, so book early and arrive at the pier with time to spare. Our guide to getting around Thailand covers ferry options.

Plan your return too. Late-night taxis and boats cost more on party nights, and drivers may refuse long rides if the roads are crowded. Agree a price before you get in, or book a ride with your accommodation in advance. If you have a flight or ferry the next morning, leave early or stay near the pier, because roads are slow after the party.

An eSIM keeps maps, messages and booking apps working while you move between the pier and your room, and a charged phone is the most useful safety tool you can bring. Check Thailand's arrival rules before you fly, including the arrival card and the visa-exempt stay, in our Thailand entry rules guide.

When to skip the party

Skip the party if you dislike crowds, loud music or heavy drinking, or if you travel with young children. The island is far more varied than its reputation, and the quieter coasts offer yoga, hammock bays, cafes and snorkeling trips. Plan your stay around the party date so rooms and ferries are easy to book, and sleep on the north or west coast.

Check the date before you choose a week. If your dates fall around the full moon and you do not want the crowd, choose Thong Nai Pan, Sri Thanu or Haad Yao, and avoid Haad Rin. If you want to compare the island with its neighbors, read Pha-Ngan, Ko Tao or Samui, which covers who each island suits.

Finally, think about the season. In the wettest months, from about October to December, the party can still go ahead, but rain, rough seas and slow ferries change the experience. In the dry months it is easier to plan, and the rest of the island is at its best. Whichever you choose, keep a spare day before any flight.

How the night usually runs

The party follows a rough pattern, though details change from month to month. Late afternoon is for food, a swim and getting ready, and bars along Sunrise Beach start filling around sunset. Music stages and bars warm up after dark, the crowd builds through the evening and the peak runs late into the night. Many people stay until sunrise, then walk back along the beach or sleep on the sand, which is one reason rooms near Haad Rin are in demand.

A sensible plan is to eat a proper meal before you go, agree where to meet if you get separated and decide in advance when you will leave. Arrange transport for the way home before the roads fill, and keep your phone charged. If you are not a heavy drinker, you can enjoy a few hours and leave early, and no one will mind.

The morning after is quiet, with cleaners working along the beach and many visitors asleep. Check-out times at party-week rooms are strict, so ask about late check-out if you plan to sleep in. If you have a ferry or flight that day, leave a large buffer, because taxis are scarce and roads are slow after the party. Our guide to where to stay on Ko Pha-Ngan shows which coast to choose if you want a calm room instead.

What else to do while you are on the island

Ko Pha-Ngan has plenty to do outside the party. Snorkeling and swimming are best from the quieter bays, hiking trails lead to waterfalls and viewpoints, and yoga studios and cafes cluster on the west coast. Boat trips run to smaller beaches along the north coast, and a day trip to Ko Tao or Ang Thong Marine National Park is possible by ferry or boat tour.

If you have a few extra days, split your stay between a party base and a calm one, so you get both the night and the island. Many travelers spend the party night in Haad Rin and then move to Thong Nai Pan or Haad Yao to recover. You can also use the party week as the start of a Gulf loop that continues to Ko Samui for flights or to Ko Tao for diving. Keep a spare day before any flight, and book early, because the island fills around the full moon.

Domande frequenti

When is the Full Moon Party on Ko Pha-Ngan?

Around each full moon, so the date changes monthly. Check a moon calendar and the local event listings for your trip, and confirm the date a few weeks before because organizers sometimes shift it for holidays.

Where do you stay for the Full Moon Party?

Haad Rin if you want to walk home, but it fills early and noise runs until morning. Otherwise stay on the west or north coast and arrange a taxi or boat for the night.

Is the Full Moon Party safe?

It is crowded and drinks are strong, so most problems come from alcohol, theft, injuries on the sand and swimming after drinking. Keep valuables at your room, watch your drinks and stay with friends.

Can you buy tickets in advance?

Usually you pay an entry fee at the beach, so there is little to buy in advance. Accommodation and transport are what need early booking. Check the current arrangements on the day.

Should you ride a scooter to the party?

No. Roads are steep and dark, and drink-driving and crashes are common. Use a taxi or boat, and check that your insurance does not exclude party nights.

Is Ko Pha-Ngan worth visiting without the party?

Yes. The north and west coasts have quiet beaches, yoga and hammock bays, and on non-party weeks Haad Rin is calm. Check the date and book around it if you want peace.
