Wat Phra Chetuphon Wimon Mangkhalaram Rajwaramahawihan

Wat Pho, south of the Grand Palace in Bangkok’s Old City, is a large Buddhist temple complex best known for its 46-metre-long Reclining Buddha.

Wat Pho, south of the Grand Palace in Bangkok’s Old City, is a large Buddhist temple complex best known for its 46-metre-long Reclining Buddha. Look closely at the mother-of-pearl designs on the statue’s feet, then explore the courtyards, golden stupas, murals and more than a thousand Buddha images. The grounds also house a traditional Thai massage school. Set aside time to see more than the main hall, and cover your shoulders and knees as a courtesy at this sacred site.

The Reclining Buddha

Wat Pho’s best-known sight is a gilded reclining statue measuring 46 metres long and 15 metres high. Its scale fills the hall, while the soles of its feet draw attention to smaller details: mother-of-pearl designs depicting 108 auspicious symbols.

Behind the statue, a row of 108 bronze bowls is used for a coin offering. Visitors can exchange money for coins there and place them in the bowls as a symbolic gesture.

Beyond the main hall

The Reclining Buddha is one part of a much larger complex. More than a thousand Buddha images, golden stupas, smaller temples and murals fill the grounds. Murals include over 400 images of the Buddha. Leave time to walk through the quieter courtyards and look closely at the architectural details rather than ending your visit at the main hall.

Traditional Thai massage

Wat Pho is associated with traditional Thai medical knowledge and has a massage school on its grounds. The school gives visitors a chance to learn about this practice or arrange a massage during their visit. A guide can also help explain the temple’s history, Buddhist symbolism and the purpose of what you see.
