Bangkok Train Station

Hua Lamphong, Bangkok’s former main railway station, is worth a stop for its sweeping arched roof, stained-glass windows and historic trains.

Hua Lamphong, Bangkok’s former main railway station, is worth a stop for its sweeping arched roof, stained-glass windows and historic trains. The Italian-inspired Neo-Renaissance building opened in 1916, and its spacious hall gives the station a distinctive old-railway feel. Selected trains still run from here, including services toward Ayutthaya. You can also browse the platforms, look for events or markets in the hall, and continue on foot to Chinatown and nearby historic neighborhoods. The station connects directly with the Hua Lamphong MRT station.

The station’s design and railway past

Bangkok Railway Station, better known as Hua Lamphong, opened in 1916 during the reign of King Rama VI. Italian architects designed the building in an Italian-inspired Neo-Renaissance style. Its arched roof and stained-glass windows give the main hall a strong sense of scale and make the architecture a reason to visit even if you are not catching a train.

For more than a century, Hua Lamphong was Bangkok’s main railway hub, linking the capital with destinations around Thailand. Long-distance services have largely shifted to Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal, but Hua Lamphong remains in use for selected trains, including local and commuter services. The change means it is no longer the departure point for most long-distance journeys, so check your route before setting out.

What to see and how to get there

Look around the platforms and public areas for historic steam locomotives and older train carriages. The open station spaces also give you a closer sense of how rail travel works here. The large hall has hosted markets and other events, so the atmosphere can differ depending on what is happening on the day. Stalls and kiosks sell snacks and drinks around the station.

Hua Lamphong MRT station connects directly with the railway building. The station is close to Chinatown, also known as Yaowarat, as well as historic neighborhoods, temples and markets. You can make the railway station one stop on a longer walk, or use it as the starting point for a train journey. Ayutthaya is one possible DIY rail trip from here; fares are described as inexpensive, but check current train details before you travel.
