Teatro Guimerá

Teatro Guimerá is a historic theatre on Plaza Isla de la Madera in central Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

Teatro Guimerá is a historic theatre on Plaza Isla de la Madera in central Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Opened in 1851, it is the oldest theatre in the Canary Islands. Its neoclassical-romantic façade and the gilded, velvet-lined auditorium, known as “the Chocolate Box,” make the building a draw in its own right. Check the programme for plays, concerts, music and dance; some performances take place outside on the square. If you do not speak Spanish, music and dance may be easier to follow.

Teatro Guimerá

Teatro Guimerá stands on Plaza Isla de la Madera in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. The building occupies the site of a former Dominican convent, dismantled during the Mendizábal confiscations in the reign of Queen Isabel II. The theatre opened in 1851, making it the oldest in the Canary Islands.

Architect Manuel de Oraá designed the building in 1849 in a romantic classicist style. Its neoclassical-romantic façade carries Queen Isabel II’s crest. The theatre was once known as Teatro Isabel II, and that name can still be seen on the façade. In 1923, it took the name of Ángel Guimerá, the writer, poet and playwright born in Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

The main auditorium is nicknamed “the Chocolate Box.” Gilded moldings, plush velvet and a frescoed ceiling give the interior its distinctive character. Tiered balconies curve around the hall, bringing the audience into the same richly decorated space.

Renovations in 1911 and 2010 updated the building while preserving its historic appearance. The complex includes the main hall, with roughly 800 to 900 seats, and a separate, more flexible annex called Guimerá Space. These spaces allow the theatre to host different kinds of performances.

Shows inside and on the square

The programme includes plays, concerts, music and dance. Performances have also taken place outside on the square, so check the current schedule rather than assuming every event is indoors. The theatre’s website is the place to look for upcoming shows and event details.

A Spanish-language play may be difficult to follow if you do not understand Spanish. Music and dance can be easier choices when language is a barrier. For a specific performance, arrange tickets ahead of time if possible, since limited seating can affect availability.
