Punta de Teno

Punta de Teno is the rocky westernmost point of Tenerife, in Teno Rural Park, about 9 km from Buenavista del Norte.

Punta de Teno is the rocky westernmost point of Tenerife, in Teno Rural Park, about 9 km from Buenavista del Norte. A lighthouse marks the peninsula, where volcanic shore meets the Atlantic and the cliffs of Los Gigantes rise across the water. On a clear day, you may also see La Gomera and La Palma. The winding coastal road is part of the journey, but car access is restricted, so plan to arrive by bus, taxi or on foot. The exposed headland can be windy, with little shelter.

At Tenerife’s western tip

Punta de Teno is a rocky peninsula in the protected Teno Rural Park, about 9 km west of Buenavista del Norte. It marks the westernmost point of Tenerife, where the Teno Mountains meet the Atlantic. The setting is exposed and rugged, with volcanic rock along the shore and steep cliffs nearby.

The lighthouse is the landmark at the end of the peninsula. Two structures stand there: an older lighthouse dating from 1893 and a larger tower built in 1976. From this part of the coast, the view reaches toward the cliffs of Los Gigantes. When visibility is good, La Gomera and La Palma can also be seen.

The road and access

The route to Punta de Teno follows the TF-445, a winding road with curves and tunnels along the cliffs. The drive is part of the scenery, but access by private car is restricted. Bus, taxi and walking are among the ways to reach the point; check transport arrangements before you leave, rather than relying on being able to drive all the way.

Use the Titsa app to check bus timetables. The road can close in bad weather, so check conditions before travelling. The headland has little shelter and can be windy, making a wind-resistant layer useful.

Views, coast and sunset

The main draw is the open view from the peninsula: dark volcanic rocks at the water’s edge, the Atlantic beyond and Los Gigantes on the coast. Sunset is a popular time for the changing light over the ocean and lighthouse. The area is also known for clear water and snorkelling, but the exposed coast can have rough waves. Rocky sections are not suitable for every swimmer; the southern side has shallower, calmer water.
