Botanical Garden

Puerto de la Cruz’s Botanical Garden, officially the Jardín de Aclimatación de La Orotava, is an 18th-century garden in the La Paz area.

Puerto de la Cruz’s Botanical Garden, officially the Jardín de Aclimatación de La Orotava, is an 18th-century garden in the La Paz area. Founded in 1788 by order of King Carlos III, it was created to grow tropical plants brought from overseas in a climate where they could acclimatise. Wander among plants and trees from different regions, pause beside the ponds, and use the QR-code map for a self-guided route. Flat paths make the garden easier to explore with a pushchair or wheelchair.

A garden made for acclimatisation

The garden’s full name is Jardín de Aclimatación de La Orotava. It was established in 1788 by order of King Carlos III, during the Spanish Enlightenment. Its original purpose was to grow plants brought from tropical regions in a suitable climate before sending them to mainland Spain.

Today, that history is part of the setting for a collection of tropical and subtropical plants. The garden covers about 20,000 square metres and is among Spain’s oldest botanical gardens. Its planting brings together species and trees from different regions, giving the grounds a distinctly varied character.

What to see among the plants

Take time to look beyond the paths at the range of plant forms: palms, exotic flowers and unusual trees all appear in the collection. The grounds include plants from across the world, and the garden’s role in acclimatising tropical species remains central to its story.

Ponds with fish offer a quieter pause between the planted areas. A QR code at the entrance gives access to a digital map for exploring independently. The paths are flat, which can make getting around easier for visitors using a wheelchair or travelling with a pushchair.

Planning your walk

Set aside at least two hours if you want to explore at an unhurried pace. Families with children may want longer. The garden is a calm alternative to a day spent at the coast, with shaded foliage and a chance to slow down among the plants.

There is no café on site, so bring a drink with you. If you are driving, arriving in the morning may help with finding nearby parking. Use the entrance QR code to open the digital map before setting off around the garden.
