In breve

Fly if you want the quickest trip, because flights to Menorca airport near Maó run from mainland Spain and across Europe, with more routes in summer. Take a ferry from Barcelona, Valencia or Mallorca if you bring a car or prefer the sea. Choose the arrival point by your base, Maó for the east and the airport, Ciutadella for the west, and book the car with the crossing.

Flight or ferry to Menorca?

Fly if you want the quickest trip, and take the ferry if you bring a car, a lot of luggage or prefer the sea. For the island itself, start with the Menorca travel guide and the wider Spain guide.

A flight from mainland Spain takes about an hour or a little more, and flights from other European cities are longer and more seasonal. A ferry is slower. Crossings from Barcelona run from roughly three and a half hours on a fast vessel to seven hours or more on a conventional ship, some of them overnight. Sailings from Valencia are less frequent and take longer. The crossing from Alcúdia in Mallorca is about an hour to an hour and a half. Check each operator for your dates, because vessel types and timetables change by season. In exchange you get a cabin or seat, the option of bringing your own car and, on some routes, a cheaper family fare.

There is no wrong answer, but there are good matches. Couples and solo travelers who rent a car on the island usually fly. Families, cyclists, motorbike riders and anyone bringing camping or sports gear often prefer the ferry, because the vehicle fare covers more than a rental plus checked bags. If you are already in Mallorca, the Alcúdia to Ciutadella ferry or a short flight from Palma are the two options; see the Palma de Mallorca travel guide for the departure side.

Flights to Menorca

Menorca has one airport, near Maó, on the east side of the island. It has flights from mainland Spanish cities such as Madrid and Barcelona throughout the year, plus more routes from across Europe in the summer season. Timetables thin in winter, so check the routes for your travel month before you plan a shoulder-season trip. Most airlines serve the island seasonally from northern Europe, and prices climb in July and August.

The airport is about 10 minutes by road from Maó and about 45 minutes from Ciutadella. Car hire desks and taxis are at the arrivals hall, and a local bus runs to Maó. If you stay in the west, factor the transfer into your first and last days. A late arrival is much easier if your first night is in Maó, and a long drive to a south-coast resort is a poor start after a long journey.

Flights also link Menorca with Palma de Mallorca and other Balearic islands. Check which airline operates the route and what the baggage rules are, because they differ. If you connect through Madrid or Barcelona from outside Europe, your border check happens at your first Schengen airport, not in Menorca. The EES explained page covers what registration involves, so allow extra time on a short connection.

Ferries to Menorca

Ferries run from Barcelona to Maó and Ciutadella, with fewer and longer sailings from Valencia, operated by several companies, and a ferry links Alcúdia in Mallorca with Ciutadella; check whether it sails on your dates. Exact routes, schedules and vessel types change between seasons, so use the operators' sites for your dates rather than any guide. Some crossings are fast vessels that take less time but cost more or are more affected by weather.

Night ferries from the mainland suit travelers who want to save a hotel night and start the day on the island. Daytime crossings let you see the sea and arrive with a full day. Taking a car adds a vehicle fare and needs a booking, usually with the passenger. Cabins and car spaces sell out first for July and August, so book as soon as your dates are set.

In rough weather, sailings can be delayed or changed, so keep a buffer on the first night, and do not book a flight home the same day you land from a night ferry. Arrive at the port early, with your ticket and ID, and follow the operator's boarding instructions. Check the weather forecast before a crossing, and check that your travel insurance covers cancellations and delays; compare the options in the travel insurance guide.

Which arrival point should you choose?

Choose the arrival point by your base. Maó has the airport and the largest ferry port, so it suits the east, the first and last nights, and travelers without a car. Ciutadella has a smaller ferry port on the west coast, and it suits a base in the old town or the south-west coves. If you take the Alcúdia ferry, it lands in Ciutadella, which is convenient for a base there.

A loop that arrives in one port and leaves from another is often smarter than a round trip, because the island is narrow but the roads are slow. Fly in to Maó and ferry out from Ciutadella, or the reverse, if your timetable allows. If you are unsure, where to stay in Menorca shows what each base offers and how far it is from the airport.

Think about the first night. After an overnight ferry or an early flight, a calm first stop close to the port is a better start than a long drive on narrow roads. Many travelers sleep one night in Maó or Ciutadella, collect the car in the morning and drive to the coast refreshed.

Car or no car on the island

Most visitors want a car in Menorca. Buses link Maó and Ciutadella along the main road and serve some resorts and beaches in summer, but the best coves, trailheads and viewpoints sit down narrow lanes. Taxis cost a lot over island distances. If you stay in Maó or Ciutadella and plan a few days of town time, you can manage with buses and walking.

Renting a car on the island is usually simpler than bringing your own, unless you are already driving from the mainland. Summer car supply is limited, so reserve it when you book the flight or the ferry, and check the insurance excess and the fuel policy. Parking at the best coves fills early. The island council's page for Cala en Turqueta, for example, describes a free car park that is limited, about a 15-minute walk from the beach, and closed to vehicles once it is full, with a public bus from Ciutadella as an alternative. Arrive early, or plan the south-west coves for late afternoon.

Your first 24 hours on the island

Treat the arrival day as a transfer day. If you land at the airport near Maó, collect the car and drive straight to your base only if it is close; for a base in the west or on the south coast, a first night in Maó breaks a long day into two short ones, especially after an early flight. If you land at Ciutadella by ferry, the old town is walkable from the port, so you can leave the car until the morning.

Buy groceries on the way in. Many south-coast bays have only a few restaurants, and a first dinner in a quiet resort is easier with a bag of food from a supermarket in Maó or Ciutadella. Download offline maps before you leave the coast road, because signal fades at remote coves. Then spend the second day on the nearest cove, not the farthest, so you learn the roads before you commit to a long drive.

Winter and shoulder-season transport

Outside summer the transport picture thins. Flight timetables are lighter, ferries run fewer sailings, and seasonal routes may not run at all, so check each leg for your month before you book anything else. Rental cars are easier to find, but hotels, beach bars and some restaurants close from about November to March, so confirm that your base is open before you buy a ticket.

If you are connecting through Madrid or Barcelona, leave a buffer on the way home, because a cancelled island flight can cost a night.

Mistakes to avoid

The first is booking the flight without the car. Summer supply on the island is limited, so reserve the car when you buy the ticket. The second is choosing the ferry for the price alone: a long crossing, a cabin and a vehicle fare can cost more in money and time than a flight and a rental. The third is flying in and out of the same airport when your base is in the west; a ferry out from Ciutadella can save a drive on the last day.

The fourth is booking a flight home the morning after a night ferry. If a crossing is delayed or rough, you lose the flight. The last is forgetting that your first Schengen airport is where the border check happens. If you connect in Spain from outside Europe, read EES explained so that you know what to expect before the island leg.

Luggage, timing and the last day

Flights to a small island often have strict baggage rules, and Menorca is no exception, so check your airline's cabin and hold allowance before you pack beach and walking gear. A ferry is more forgiving, and a car lets you carry a cool box, a parasol and walking poles without paying for extra bags. If you take a ferry with a car, pack a small overnight bag, because the vehicle deck is closed during the crossing.

Plan the last day as carefully as the first. Return the car with a margin, allow time for the airport or the port, and avoid booking a flight home on the morning after a late ferry. If you stay in Ciutadella at the end of the trip, the drive to the airport is about 45 minutes, so a night in Maó before an early flight is often smarter. In peak weeks, airport roads and car return queues are busier than they look.

Book in the right order

Book the flight or crossing first, then the car, then the first two nights of accommodation. Transport sets your arrival point, and the car depends on it. Rooms in the main bases fill early for summer, and the last rooms are expensive. If a plan changes, many operators have change policies, so check them before you commit. Our how many days in Menorca guide helps you set the length of the stay before you book.

Set up data with the connectivity guide, compare cover in the travel insurance guide and use getting around Europe if Menorca is part of a longer rail and ferry trip. A Balearic sustainable tourism tax is added per person per night at your accommodation, so see tourist taxes in Europe before you set a budget.
