Recinte Modernista de Sant Pau

Recinte Modernista de Sant Pau is a former hospital complex on Carrer de Sant Antoni Maria Claret in Barcelona, designed by Lluís Domènech i Montaner.

Recinte Modernista de Sant Pau is a former hospital complex on Carrer de Sant Antoni Maria Claret in Barcelona, designed by Lluís Domènech i Montaner. Its pavilions bring Catalan Modernisme to life through colorful ceramics, mosaics, stained glass and sculpted details, set among gardens and linked by underground passages. The hospital remained in use until 2009; today, the restored site is open to visitors as a cultural complex. Take time to look closely at the building details and explore the tunnels as well as the grounds.

A hospital designed as a complex

Lluís Domènech i Montaner designed the Hospital de la Santa Creu i de Sant Pau as a large public hospital. Construction took place in the early 20th century, with accounts placing the work between 1901 and 1930. The hospital opened in 1916 and continued operating until 2009.

The site contains 27 buildings, including 16 pavilions, each with its own design. Domènech i Montaner’s plan treated the hospital as a group of separate buildings set among gardens, rather than one single block. Underground passages connect the pavilions, allowing movement between buildings below ground.

Details to look for

The complex is known for its Catalan Modernisme architecture. Look at the colorful ceramics and mosaics, the stained-glass windows, arches and sculpted details. The pavilions and gardens give the grounds the character of a small city, with open spaces between the buildings.

The design was intended to support patients’ well-being and recovery. Light, gardens and carefully decorated buildings were part of the hospital setting, not additions made for its later life as a visitor site. The underground passages offer another way to understand how the separate pavilions were connected.

From hospital to cultural site

Sant Pau’s hospital use ended in 2009, when a new hospital opened next door. After a five-year restoration, the complex opened to the public as a museum site in 2014. It is now used for cultural and research purposes, including offices and international organizations.

The complex is part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site together with the Palau de la Música Catalana. On a visit, you can explore the restored buildings, gardens and underground galleries, and learn about both the architecture and the site’s medical history. An audio guide is available for visitors who want additional context.
