Ciutadella Park is a large public park in Barcelona’s Ciutat Vella district, with leafy paths, open lawns, sculptures and a lake for rowing boats. Its standout landmark is the Cascada Monumental, an ornate fountain designed by Josep Fontserè with help from a young Antoni Gaudí. You can also look for the life-size mammoth sculpture and the Arc de Triomf at the park’s edge. Come for a walk, a picnic or a pause between sights; playgrounds and the Barcelona Zoo add options for families.

From citadel to public park

The park takes its name from the military citadel that once occupied this part of Barcelona. Built after the War of the Spanish Succession, the fortress was intended to secure Madrid’s military control of the city. Its construction involved demolishing around 1,000 homes in the Barri de la Ribera. The fortress walls came down in 1868, and gardens replaced the military grounds.

Josep Fontserè drew up the original park project in 1872, taking inspiration from the Luxembourg Gardens in Paris. The site was adapted for the 1888 Universal Exhibition, then changed again in 1892 when the Barcelona Zoo was established. The park now brings together green space, monuments and civic buildings in the Ciutat Vella district.

The fountain and its sculptures

The Cascada Monumental is the park’s best-known landmark. Josep Fontserè designed the fountain with help from Antoni Gaudí, who was still a young architecture student. Sculptures and cascading water give the structure its distinctive scale; look up to see Aurora in her chariot, above a sculpted scene associated with the birth of Venus. Steps around the fountain provide different views of its architecture.

There is more to spot as you walk. The park contains numerous sculptures, gardens and 19th-century buildings, including the Castle of the Three Dragons. A life-size mammoth sculpture is another easy landmark to look for, especially if you are visiting with children. At the park’s edge, the Arc de Triomf was built as the entrance to the 1888 Universal Exhibition.

The lake, gardens and park buildings

A small lake offers rowboat outings among the park’s paths and lawns. You can rent a boat, or stay on land and watch the activity from the shore. The park also has playgrounds, shaded places to sit and open areas used for picnics and recreation. Dogs are allowed, and there is a fenced area where they can run freely.

The Glass House, an iron-and-glass structure, holds exotic and tropical plants, including carnivorous species. The park’s buildings also include the Museu Martorell, a historic natural history museum, and the Laboratori de Natura. The grounds contain the Catalan Parliament and the Barcelona Zoo, which occupies part of the park. Check each attraction separately if you plan to go inside, as the park itself and its individual facilities are distinct stops.

Planning a walk

Ciutadella Park is large enough for a casual stroll to stretch into a longer visit. You can focus on the fountain, lake and mammoth, or follow the paths through the gardens and sculptures. Allow extra time if you want to row, stop for a picnic or visit one of the attractions within the grounds.

The park sits near El Born and the Arc de Triomf, so it fits naturally into a walk through this part of Barcelona. Morning and sunset are useful times to visit if you want soft light for photographs. After rain, watch your footing on muddy sections of the paths. In busier areas near the fountain, keep your belongings secure.
