Casa Golferichs is a civic centre on Gran Via de les Corts Catalanes in Barcelona’s Eixample, in a house designed by Joan Rubió i Bellver in 1900. Its pointed arches bring a Gothic influence to a Modernista design marked by colourful ceramics and floral details. Built for Macari Golferichs, an importer of tropical wood, the house now hosts courses, activities, concerts and art exhibitions. Stop to see the architecture and check the centre’s schedule for an event during your visit.

A house saved by local protests

Architect Joan Rubió i Bellver designed Casa Golferichs in 1900 for Macari Golferichs, an importer of tropical wood. The house combines pointed arches, associated with Gothic design, with Modernista details such as colourful ceramics and floral motifs.

After the Spanish Civil War, the building became a religious school. A private developer bought it in the late 1960s with plans to demolish it. Protests by neighbours helped save the house. Barcelona City Council converted it into a civic centre in 1980, and it underwent extensive renovation in 2004.

A civic centre inside a Modernista house

Casa Golferichs now hosts courses and other activities, as well as concerts and art exhibitions. Check its programme if you want to combine a look around the historic building with an event. The house’s construction also reflects the importance of wood and natural stone in its design.

The civic centre is on Gran Via de les Corts Catalanes in the Eixample. Its entrance and parking are wheelchair accessible. A visit on a sunny day can help bring out the building’s colours and architectural details.
