Casa Calvet is an apartment and former commercial building by Antoni Gaudí at Carrer de Casp, 48, in Barcelona’s Eixample district. Built between 1898 and 1900 for a textile family, it is one of his more restrained designs, with Baroque influence and a notably symmetrical façade. Look up to spot the curved wrought-iron balconies and carved details, then take in the stained glass and modernist light fixtures in the ground-floor restaurant, China Crown Casa Calvet. The upper floors remain residential, so this is a street-side stop, not a house museum.

A different side of Gaudí

Casa Calvet was built between 1898 and 1900 for a textile family, as a place for both commercial use and residence. Its position among older buildings in Eixample called for a more ordered design than Gaudí’s later, more organic work. The façade’s symmetry and repetition set it apart from many of his better-known Barcelona buildings.

Baroque influence gives the exterior a traditional feel, but the details still carry Gaudí’s touch. Curved iron balconies, sculpted stonework and the curved upper line reward a closer look. The building offers a useful contrast if you have already seen, or plan to visit, his more expressive designs.

The ground floor and upper apartments

The ground floor retains original elements, including stained-glass windows and modernist light fixtures. It now houses China Crown Casa Calvet, a Chinese restaurant; dining there is the way to see parts of the interior. The upper floors are residential and are not open for public tours.

Casa Calvet was declared a Site of Cultural Interest in 1969. For a visit without a meal, the façade is the main attraction: pause across the street and look over the balconies, stone details and curved roofline.
