In breve

Late May to mid-November is the window when the high trails are open, because forest fire prevention closures cover 2 March to 15 May and 15 November to 15 December on the upper routes. Autumn foliage is the busiest and most photographed season, early summer is wet, typhoon season runs June to November, and winter brings snow and shorter days.

The short answer

The best time to visit Seoraksan depends less on temperature than on which trails are open. The upper routes toward Daecheongbong close for forest fire prevention in two windows each year, so the high hikes fit from late May to mid-November, and the foliage season inside that window is both the prettiest and the busiest. The Seoraksan travel guide covers the park, and the South Korea guide covers the rest of South Korea.

The figures here come from the Korea Tourism Organization, or KTO, and from the UK government's travel advice for South Korea, both read on 4 October 2026. No temperature or rainfall numbers are quoted, because none were verified, and the KTO's closure dates come from a page dated 2024, so confirm them with the park for your year. The short plan: choose September or October if you want everything open and can accept crowds, choose late May to June for quieter trails before the rainy season, and keep winter for short walks.

Spring: flowers, closures and dust

The KTO says the mountain shows various flowers in spring, but spring is also the season in which the upper trails are closed for much of the time. The closure runs from 2 March to 15 May, so a trip in March, April or the first half of May means the summit climb is off the table, while the walk from Sogongwon to Biseondae stays open. That makes spring a good season for the valley and for the cable car, and a poor one for Daecheongbong.

There is also an air quality point. The UK government notes that air pollution, including yellow dust, is common in South Korea, especially in spring, and advises following local media and the Korean Meteorological Administration. On hazy days, views from the rock viewpoints are weaker, which affects the main reason to climb. Check the forecast the evening before, and keep a flexible day.

For the same reason, spring suits travelers who prefer a lighter plan: a morning walk, the cable car at the quiet end of the week and an afternoon in the coastal city of Gangneung or the wider Gangwon-do region.

Summer: streams, rain and typhoons

The KTO describes clear, fresh stream water as the summer picture of the mountain, which fits the valley walk from Sogongwon toward Biseondae. The weather is the complication. The UK government says South Korea has heavy rainfall across the country in the summer rainy season, usually June and July, with torrential rain that can cause flooding near rivers and creeks, flash floods downstream of reservoirs and landslides in hilly and mountainous areas. It also says the typhoon season normally runs from June to November, and recommends monitoring the Korea Meteorological Administration, or calling 131 for an English forecast.

For a hiker, that means the early summer months carry the most risk of a wasted day, and the mountain's valleys are the last place to be in a flash flood. Choose a valley walk only after checking the forecast, avoid streams after heavy rain and have a plan B that does not depend on a single day. Late May and early June, after the closure ends and before the heavy rain starts, are a useful window when the high trails are open and the season is milder.

Summer is also the season when the cable car and the lower trails are accessible, but it is not a quiet time. School holidays push domestic travel, so book rooms and buses early for peak weeks, and carry rain gear every day.

Autumn: foliage, crowds and the best access

Autumn is the headline season. The KTO calls Seoraksan the most beautiful mountain in Korea and lists fall foliage among its seasonal draws, and its pages note that the cable car draws many visitors on weekends, public holidays and in the foliage season, and advise planning ahead. The KTO's note on Baekdamsa Temple in the Inner Seorak area adds that the surrounding mountains turn red in fall, and that the temple offers Templestay programs for international visitors.

The closure calendar favors autumn too. From the end of the spring closure on 15 May to the start of the autumn one on 15 November, the upper trails are open, so September and October combine access with scenery. The KTO gives no fixed dates for peak color, and foliage moves down the mountain over several weeks, so treat any date as an approximation and check the park's notices and forecasts.

The cost is crowds. Lines for the cable car lengthen, trailhead parking fills and buses into the park carry full loads. The best response is timing, not avoidance: go on a weekday, start at first light, hike Ulsanbawi in the morning and keep the cable car for a quiet slot. The cable car or Ulsanbawi comparison explains how to split the day.

Winter: snow, short days and closures

The KTO says snow and ice on the mountain create exquisite scenery in winter, and that is the reason to come. It is not the season for ambitious hiking. The upper trails are closed in the second half of November and the first half of December for fire prevention, the days are short and stairs on viewpoint trails can be icy. A winter visit suits a shorter plan: the lower valley walk, a visit to the cable car if it is running, and a warm afternoon in a nearby town.

The KTO's listing for Outer Seorak gives entry hours of 04:00 to 12:00 in winter and 03:00 to 14:00 in summer, without saying which trails or gates they apply to. Treat that as a reminder that early cut-offs exist and ask the park office which ones apply to your route. Carry traction for icy stairs, layers and a headlamp if your plan runs late.

A month-by-month shortcut

If you want the calendar in one pass, read it in three blocks. From December to mid-March the park is quiet and snowy, with the upper trails closed in the second half of November and the first half of December and shorter daylight throughout. From mid-March to mid-May the upper trails are closed for much of the period, so the plan is valley walks, the cable car and the coast. From mid-May to mid-November the high trails are open, with June and July the wettest and the start of typhoon season, and September to early November the most reliable and the busiest.

Within that last block, two sub-windows stand out. Late May and early June come after the spring closure ends and before the heavy rain, so the mountain is open and the crowds are lighter. September and October bring clearer weather and the foliage, so they are the choice if you want the full range of trails and can accept lines. If your dates are fixed in July or August, choose lower trails and a flexible plan.

Where you sleep changes the answer too. Staying near Sokcho lets you start at first light, which matters in autumn when parking fills and in winter when daylight is short. The Seoraksan hiking guide shows how to reach the trailhead by bus, and the coast city of Gangneung is an alternative base on the same rail and bus network.

If you can pick only one window, pick the period from late May to mid-June or September to early November, and book a flexible stay in case rain or a typhoon interrupts the plan. If you must travel in a closure period, build the day around the valley, the cable car and the coast. The Seoraksan hiking guide lists each trail's distance and time so that you can match them to the season.

Who should skip which season

Skip the autumn weekend if crowds spoil a mountain for you, and go midweek or in the shoulder weeks. Skip June and July if you cannot be flexible, since the rainy season and the start of typhoon season make a single fixed day risky. Skip winter for long hikes. Skip March to mid-May if the summit is the point of the trip.

Mistakes to avoid

The first mistake is planning the summit for a closure date. The second is trusting a 2024 page without a check, since the KTO's closure dates come from an article dated that year. The third is planning a single fixed day in the rainy season without a backup. The fourth is arriving on a foliage weekend with no booking for rooms or buses. The fifth is ignoring early afternoon turn-around times when daylight is short.

Insurance, data and entry

Weather is the main risk to a Seoraksan trip, so compare policies that cover cancellations and hiking in the travel insurance guide, and read how rates and cards work abroad in the money guide. Set up data with the phone and data guide. The UK government says visa-free British visitors are exempt from K-ETA until 31 December 2026; the K-ETA explained page covers who needs it.

Domande frequenti

When is the best time to visit Seoraksan?

Late May to early November if you want the high trails, since the upper routes are closed from 2 March to 15 May and from 15 November to 15 December for forest fire prevention, according to the KTO. Autumn is the most scenic and the most crowded.

When is the autumn foliage at Seoraksan?

The KTO says the mountain is known for fall foliage, and that the cable car draws many visitors in the foliage season, but it gives no fixed dates. Foliage moves down the mountain over several weeks, so check the forecast and the park's notices for your year.

Is Seoraksan worth visiting in winter?

Yes for snowy scenery and a quiet day on the low trails, but not for long hikes. The KTO notes that snow and ice change the mountain, and the upper trails are closed from 15 November to 15 December. Short daylight and slippery stairs make a shorter plan sensible.

Does it rain a lot at Seoraksan in summer?

The UK government says South Korea has heavy rainfall across the country in the summer rainy season, usually in June and July, with flooding and landslides possible in mountains, and typhoons normally from June to November. Build a flexible day and check the forecast.

What is the best month for hiking Daecheongbong?

Choose a month after the spring closure ends on 15 May and before the autumn one begins on 15 November, and prefer a dry spell. Early autumn gives the best mix of access and scenery. Confirm current closure dates with the park, since the source page is from 2024.
