Gamcheon Culture Village is a hillside neighborhood in Saha-gu, Busan, where small terraced houses in bright colors step down a coastal mountain toward the sea. It began as a refugee settlement during the Korean War and has been an art village since a renewal project in 2009. Entry is free. You walk steep alleys and stairways past murals, sculptures, galleries, cafes and small shops, and climb to viewpoints over the rooftops. People live and work here, so keep your voice low and ask before photographing anyone.

From refugee settlement to art village

Gamcheon was settled by refugees during the Korean War, in the 1950s, and for decades it was one of the poorest districts in Korea. The name means "sweet water". The houses were built in tight terraces up the mountainside, and the plan for the refugee settlement gave the village its checkerboard look, with buildings of similar size and materials.

The area stayed underdeveloped into the early 2000s. In 2009 a renewal project brought residents, artists and local officials together. Houses were repainted, public art was commissioned, and an empty-house project turned abandoned homes into exhibition spaces and galleries. Murals and sculptures now cover walls across the village, many made by local residents.

Walking the alleys

The route is a maze of narrow lanes and steep staircases, and it is easy to lose your bearings. That is part of the point. The stamp map, sold at the Information Centre for about 2,000 KRW, gives you a route and a scavenger hunt, with stamps to collect at designated stations. Without a map it is hard to know what you are missing.

The Little Prince is a recurring figure. A statue of the Little Prince with the Fox is one of the main photo spots. If you walk a little further down from the statue, you get a good angle on the colored rooftops. The path up to the observatory rooftop passes wall paintings, more Little Prince statues and a staircase decorated like a stack of books. From the top you see the whole slope of houses.

Murals of Jungkook and Jimin of BTS are also in the village. If you want to dress up, you can borrow hanbok in several styles, from traditional to fusion.

Cafes, galleries and shops

Many of the houses are now galleries, cafes, small eateries and souvenir shops, so you can stop whenever the climb gets tiring. Cafe Avant Garde has a wide terrace on its right side with an open view across the village. Some shops and cafes close earlier than the village itself, and their hours change with the season and the day of the week.

Getting there

The village is not near a train station, so you need a bus or a taxi. From Jagalchi station (line 1), take exit 1 and walk about 6 minutes to Chungmu market. There, take the Saha-gu 1-1 bus for 11 stops to Gamcheon Culture Village. From Toseong station, a bus takes about ten minutes to reach the viewpoint area. Gamcheon lies a short drive west of Nampo and Gwangbok in Jung-gu. Many one-day Busan tours include a stop here.

Visiting respectfully

Residents live and work in the village, and visiting hours run from morning until about 5 or 6 pm all year. Keep noise down, stay on the marked paths and never photograph people without their permission.
