The Stewartry Museum tells the story of the Stewartry, the historic name for Kirkcudbrightshire, in the eastern part of Galloway. Its collections cover both human and natural history, bringing together archaeological finds, everyday objects, industrial heritage and displays about local wildlife.

The museum began in 1879 in part of Kirkcudbright Town Hall. As its collection grew, a purpose-built home was planned. The present building opened in 1893, and its period fittings give the displays an old-fashioned museum feel.

The ground floor is arranged around glass-fronted wooden cabinets, with objects grouped by theme. Upstairs, a balcony gallery has glass-topped display cases. Together, the displays cover subjects including archaeology, farming, jewellery, photography and natural history.

Allow time to look at the upper gallery, where the natural history exhibits include wildlife from the area. The gallery can only be reached by stairs. If you cannot use them, ask staff whether they can help you access information or pictures of the upstairs displays.
