The castle and the Atholl family

Blair Castle & Gardens

Blair Castle has been the seat of the Dukes and Earls of Atholl and the home of generations of the Stewart and Murray families. Its history stretches back more than 700 years. The castle is also home to the Atholl Highlanders, described as Britain’s only private army.

The building changed over time. A tower fortification dates from 1296, with a hall range probably added in the 16th century. Its current white exterior and turrets give the castle a distinctive profile beneath the wooded slopes of Highland Perthshire.

Thirty rooms are open to the public. Their tapestries, intricate plasterwork, paintings, furniture and historical displays bring together details of the house and the lives of its residents. The collections include weapons associated with the Battle of Culloden.

The rooms present a picture of upper-class Highland life from the 16th century onwards. An audio guide provides historical context as you tour the house. The castle has also hosted Mary, Queen of Scots, Bonnie Prince Charlie and Queen Victoria.

Gardens and estate grounds

The castle stands within the Atholl Estate, surrounded by gardens and Highland scenery. A walk through the grounds offers a quieter part of the visit after the rooms. The gardens have their own appeal outside the main flowering season, with tall trees and planting to explore; spring and summer bring the garden into bloom.

St Bride’s Kirk stands on a mound a little to the north-east of the castle. The grounds and gardens extend the visit beyond the house, so plan for several hours if you want time for both.
