Moscow Zoo

Moscow Zoo is a large wildlife park on Bolshaya Gruzinskaya Street, west of the city center.

Moscow Zoo is a large wildlife park on Bolshaya Gruzinskaya Street, west of the city center. Founded in 1864, it is home to animals from around the world, including giant pandas, polar bears, Siberian tigers, elephants and Arctic foxes. Its spacious grounds have green paths, rest areas, cafes and a children’s play area. Maps and wildlife information help you plan your route, but the zoo is too large to see everything in one visit, so choose a few priority animals before you arrive.

A zoo with a long history

Moscow Zoo
Moscow Zoo

Moscow Zoo opened in 1864. The idea for it was proposed by zoology professor A.P. Bogdanov, and the Imperial Russian Society for the Acclimatization of Animals and Plants helped establish it. Donations from the imperial family supported the early zoo. It became state property in 1919, and management passed to the Moscow government in 1922.

The grounds cover about 21.5 hectares. That scale gives you room to see a broad range of wildlife, but it also makes a planned route useful. Pick the animals you most want to see before setting out, especially if you have only a few hours.

The collection includes animals from Russia and other parts of the world. Polar bears, Arctic foxes, seals, Siberian lynx and owls bring a strong northern focus; giant pandas, elephants, tigers and primates add to the range. The zoo also has birds, reptiles and aquatic life.

The grounds include green spaces and paths between animal areas, with places to sit along the main routes. Maps and information boards can help you find exhibits and check feeding schedules. The zoo also has cafes and a playground for children.

Planning your route

A visit can take a few hours, and seeing the whole zoo in one day may not be realistic. Choose a shortlist of exhibits in advance, then use the maps to guide your walk. Arriving early gives you more time before the grounds become busier; weekdays are also a useful choice if you want to avoid the largest crowds.

Tickets can be bought online, which may save time at the entrance. Make sure everyone in your group has a ticket. If you need help communicating with staff, keep a translation app handy.

Learning and conservation

Wildlife information is provided around the zoo, including material about feeding times. The zoo’s work includes education, research and conservation, as well as the rescue and rehabilitation of injured wildlife. Children can also take part in educational activities such as excursions, quests, workshops and lectures; animal feeding demonstrations are scheduled at specific times.
