Cabo de sao Vincente Lighthouse

Cabo de São Vicente Lighthouse sits at the southwestern tip of mainland Europe, a short drive west of Sagres in Portugal.

Cabo de São Vicente Lighthouse sits at the southwestern tip of mainland Europe, a short drive west of Sagres in Portugal. Built in 1904, it has one of the most powerful lights in Europe, visible up to 90 km away. A 16th-century fortress surrounds the tower, and a small museum covers the history of the site. Most people come for the cliffs, the open Atlantic, the boats passing offshore and the sunset. Food trucks and souvenir stalls stand near the tower, and walking paths run along the cliff edge.

The lighthouse was built in 1904 and is counted among the most powerful in Europe. Its light can be seen from 90 km away. Around it runs a fortress from the 16th century, put up to defend the site against Moorish attacks.

A local legend says the fortress walls stand on the ground of a medieval convent, the place where the remains of Saint Vincent are said to lie. The cape takes its name from him.

The small museum

The lighthouse complex has a small museum on Portugal's maritime navigation and on the importance of the cape. A visit takes 30 minutes at most. The displays include images and documents from the 1500s to the present day.

The keeper opens the lighthouse to visitors at his own discretion, so the interior is not always available. The outside views do not depend on it.

Walking the cliffs

The cape is the southwesternmost point of mainland Europe, where the coast turns from the Costa Vicentina in the west to the southern coast of the Algarve. The road to the lighthouse is easy to drive, and there are free car parks and street parking nearby, including a parking area for wheelchair users.

On foot, the cliffs reward a longer stay. A walk north along the edge leads away from the crowds. Coastal routes in the area also pass the cliff at Praia do Telheiro, which shows one of the largest geological differences on the Iberian Peninsula, and continue to Ponta Ruiva beach. On parts of the wilder trails the waymarked posts give way to stone cairns, so watch for them as you go.

Food trucks and stalls selling clothes and souvenirs stand near the tower. The site is exposed, and the wind is strong.

Combining it with Sagres

Sagres Fortress is a 10-minute drive east of the cape and makes a good first stop, an introduction to the same cliffs. On the way back along the southern shore, Forte do Beliche is another fort set on the cliffs and can be explored on foot. Without a car, bus 47 from Lagos reaches the cape, and the same bus runs back.
