Church of Saint Ildefonso

The Church of Saint Ildefonso stands beside Batalha Square in central Porto.

The Church of Saint Ildefonso stands beside Batalha Square in central Porto. Completed in 1739, this Baroque church is known for its twin towers and blue-and-white azulejo façade, added in 1932. The tiles depict scenes from the life of Saint Ildefonso and the Gospels, and their detail shows especially clearly in daylight. Step inside for a quieter atmosphere, Baroque decoration and an ornate altar. The church is still used for worship, so keep your voice low and allow space for anyone praying.

The church and its earlier chapel

The Church of Saint Ildefonso is near Batalha Square in Porto. The present building was completed in 1739 and is named for Ildephonsus of Toledo, a seventh-century Visigothic bishop.

An earlier chapel called Santo Alifon stood on the site. A written reference to the chapel dates to 1296. By 1709 it was in danger of collapse, so it was demolished and construction of the church began. Work took three decades: the main body was complete by 1730, and the towers, façade and entrance porch followed before the church was inaugurated and blessed in 1739. The architect is unknown.

The blue-and-white azulejos were added to the façade in 1932. Made by artist Jorge Colaço, the panels depict scenes from the life of Saint Ildefonso and the Gospels. They sit among Baroque sculptural details on the church front.

Take time to look across the façade from the square, then notice the two bell towers. Daylight brings out the contrast of the blue tiles against the building. The church’s position beside Batalha Square makes it easy to include on a walk through central Porto.

Inside the church

The interior has Baroque decoration and an ornate altar. Visitors can also find exhibitions on different floors of the church; an extra euro has been suggested for access, though the current arrangement is not specified here.

The interior offers a quieter contrast to the streets outside, but this is an active place of worship. Speak softly and be considerate of anyone attending to pray. Check the church’s website for current visiting information before you go.
