In breve

Stay in the old town for a first trip of three or four nights, because the beach, the lanes and the bars are on foot. Choose Oura for nightlife, Areias de São João for resort hotels with pools, and Falésia for a calmer beach with a car. The municipal tax is added to the bill from April to October, so compare totals.

How to choose a base in Albufeira

Albufeira is not one place but a string of them along a stretch of Algarve cliffs: a walled old town above a fishermen's beach, a nightlife district to the east, resort belts with big hotels and, past them, a calmer coast of red cliffs. The Albufeira travel guide covers what the town offers, and this page settles where to sleep. For the wider trip, the Portugal guide shows how the Algarve fits with Lisbon and Porto.

The choice comes down to three questions. How much of your day do you want to spend walking rather than waiting for a bus or a taxi? How late do you want the street outside your window to stay awake? And do you have a car? Albufeira rewards the first answer more than most Algarve towns, because the old town puts a beach, restaurants and bars within a few minutes of each other, while the outlying bases trade that for space and quiet. A rental car changes the equation, since it makes Falésia and the eastern beaches practical and lets you reach Benagil and Lagos in a morning.

Prices in this guide are relative bands, not quoted rates: $ is a simple guesthouse, $$ a mid-range hotel or apartment, $$$ a resort or a seafront stay. Real rates swing sharply with the calendar, and July and August cost the most. Check the total at booking, including breakfast, parking, pool access and the local tax that the hotel adds to the bill.

The old town is the postcard Albufeira: whitewashed lanes above Fishermen's Beach, small squares, restaurants and bars, and a short walk down to the sand. Staying here means you step out of your door into the evening, and you can walk back for a rest in the heat of the afternoon. For a trip of three to five nights it is the most efficient base, because you spend your time on the beach and at dinner rather than reaching them.

The trade-offs are slopes, noise and access. The lanes climb steeply from the beach, so check how far you roll a suitcase from the nearest taxi drop-off and whether the building has a lift. Weekend nights are lively, and rooms that face a bar street can be loud into the early hours, so ask for an upper floor or a courtyard room if you sleep lightly. Parking is limited, which is another reason the old town suits visitors without a car.

Property types are mainly small hotels, guesthouses and apartments above shops, with a few larger hotels on the edge of the pedestrian zone. Check whether air conditioning is included, which matters from June to September. When the beach day is done, the marina is a short ride away and is where many boat trips to the Benagil caves start, so the old town doubles as a launch point for the main day out.

Evita se you want a quiet street after midnight or a pool and parking at the door. Areias de São João or Falésia suits you better.

Oura is the district east of the old town where the bars and clubs concentrate on the Strip, and where many apartments and mid-range hotels cluster around Praia da Oura. It is the base for people who want nightlife outside the door, and for groups that value a cheap apartment close to the action over a quiet street. The beach is a short walk, and the old town is a short taxi or walk away, so you can split your evenings between the two.

The cost of that convenience is noise and a younger crowd late at night. Families and travelers who go to bed early should book away from the Strip, or choose a different area. In shoulder months the district is calmer and more of the bars close, which is a good time to stay if you want lower rates without the full volume. Ask the hotel which way the room faces and how far the nearest late-night venue is.

Evita se you travel with young children or want early nights. Areias de São João or Falésia suits you better.

3. Areias de São João

Best for

$$–$$$

Areias de São João is a resort belt along a long beach, with large hotels, pools and kids' clubs, and it is where many package holidays land. The appeal is simplicity: you wake up, go to the pool or the beach, and the hotel handles food and entertainment. Evenings are quieter than in Oura, so families can put children to bed without competing with bass from the street.

The compromise is distance. The old town and the marina are a bus or taxi ride away, so a night out takes planning, and most meals are in the hotel or in nearby restaurants. All-inclusive plans suit travelers who want to spend little time deciding where to eat, but they can feel limiting if you want to explore. Ask what the rate includes, whether the pool is shaded and how far the beach access is from your block.

Evita se you want a historic center on foot or a bar-lined street. The old town fits better.

4. Falésia and Olhos de Água

East of the main resort belt, the coast opens into Falésia, a long beach under striped red cliffs, and the small village of Olhos de Água. This is where Albufeira feels least like a resort: villas, resort apartments and a few hotels sit above wide sand, with space to walk for an hour in either direction. It suits couples and travelers who want a calm beach week and do not mind a short drive to dinner.

The trade-off is that you need wheels. Evening options are fewer, taxis add up, and a trip into the old town is a planned outing. If you do not drive, check the transfer and taxi options before you book, and read the guide to getting from Faro airport to Albufeira, since the final leg to this side of town is longer than to the old town.

Evita se you plan to go out in the old town most nights and have no car. The old town or Oura suits you better.

Which base fits your trip?

Work backward from the kind of week you want. A first visit of three to five nights with a boat trip and a few dinners belongs in the old town, because you will use the beach and the lanes every day and the marina is close. A group of friends who want late nights and cheap apartments belongs in Oura. A family week built around a pool and a long beach belongs at Areias de São João, where the hotel carries much of the day. A couple who want long beach walks and quiet nights belong at Falésia, with a car for the rest.

If you are still weighing Albufeira against the western Algarve, the Albufeira or Lagos comparison explains which town fits which kind of trip, and the Lagos travel guide shows what the other side looks like. For a smaller cove town nearer the caves, see Carvoeiro.

Length of stay matters too. One night is a transit stop before a flight, so sleep near the road or the station you will use. Three to five nights suit any of the four areas. A week or more is where the outlying bases pay off, because you have time to settle into the quiet and the extra distance stops mattering.

Booking tips, timing and the tourist tax

Book early for July and August and for school-holiday weeks in the shoulder months, since the old town and Oura sell out first. If your dates are flexible, May, June, September and early October give warm weather and a swimmable sea with more choice and lower rates. In the middle of winter the resort areas are mild but many venues close, so check what stays open if you travel then.

Check what the room rate includes, because breakfast, parking, air conditioning, pool access and sun loungers vary widely. Many old-town buildings have no private parking, so if you rent a car, ask about nearby garages or collect it only for the days you need it.

The tax is small, but it makes headline rates misleading when you compare a long stay in April or October with one in November. See tourist taxes in Europe for how the charges differ between towns. If a municipal rate is listed with a different age rule than your family needs, ask the hotel for the final total before you pay.

Getting to your base

Most visitors land at Faro, and none of the four bases is a short walk from the airport. The airport has no rail station, so the choice is a bus, a taxi, a shared transfer or a rental car, and the right one depends on your arrival time and your base. The trip is laid out in Faro airport to Albufeira, including why Albufeira-Ferreiras station is not a town station. Arrivals from outside Europe also pass EES registration at the border, covered in EES explained, so ask a transfer company to track your flight rather than fix a pickup minute.

Mistakes to avoid

The first is booking the cheapest apartment near the Strip for a family trip and discovering the noise on the first night. The second is choosing Falésia without a car, then paying for taxis to every dinner. The third is trusting a map that makes the old town look flat: the lanes climb, and a hotel at the top of the slope has a hard walk with luggage. The fourth is comparing rates without the tourist tax and the parking fee, which can change which hotel is cheaper.

The last is leaving the boat trip to the day you arrive. Operators sell out in summer, and the sea decides whether trips run, so plan one for a day with a spare day behind it.

Before you go

Mobile data matters on the coast: an eSIM for Portugal keeps bus apps, maps and the ride-hailing you may need after dark working from the arrivals hall. Add travel insurance if your booking is non-refundable, since a delayed flight or a heat-struck day can cost a night. For moving along the coast once you have a base, the Portugal guide to trains and cars explains where the Algarve line helps and where it does not.

Domande frequenti

Where is the best area to stay in Albufeira?

The old town suits most first visits because the beach, the lanes and the restaurants are on foot. Choose Oura for nightlife, Areias de São João for resort pools and Falésia for a calmer beach if you have a car.

Is Albufeira old town or Oura better?

The old town has the beach and the historic lanes within a short walk; Oura has the Strip's bars and more apartments. Pick the old town for variety and Oura only if late nights are the point.

Is Albufeira good for families?

Yes, with the right base. Areias de São João and Falésia have resort hotels with pools and wide beaches, and evenings are calmer than around Oura's Strip. The old town works for older children.

Do you need a car in Albufeira?

Not in the old town or Oura, where walking, taxis and buses cover most trips. A car helps if you stay at Falésia or want Benagil, Lagos and the west coast in the same week.

Is there a tourist tax in Albufeira?

Yes. Albufeira's 2024 regulation sets 2 euros per night from April to October, up to 7 nights, for guests aged 13 and over. The hotel adds it to the bill, so check the total and the current rate.
