A science centre built for participation

W5 is at the Odyssey complex on Queen’s Quay in Belfast. Its name comes from five questions: who, what, where, when and why. The centre puts those questions into practice through interactive exhibits that invite visitors to experiment, investigate and learn by doing.

More than 250 exhibits cover subjects including nature, climate change, medical science, engineering, film and television. The mix makes a visit relevant to different interests: one person can explore the human body while another tries a technology or physics activity. Children are the main audience, but adults can take part alongside them.

Climbing, role play and science activities

A large climbing structure is one of the centre’s prominent play areas. Younger visitors can also use the soft-play space on the ground floor. Its sessions are timed, so arrange a 45-minute slot in advance if you want to include it in your visit. Seating and a coffee dock are available near the play areas, giving adults a place to pause.

Other exhibits use tactile activities and role play to bring science topics to life. Depending on what is available during your visit, you may encounter optical illusions, climbing challenges, themed areas or demonstrations. W5 also runs drop-in activities and a changing programme of exhibitions and events, so the experience can differ between visits.

Planning your visit

Set aside several hours. Families who want to explore at an unhurried pace may prefer to use the all-day ticket to return after a break. Booking ahead is recommended, particularly if you want to secure a soft-play session. Weekdays and off-peak periods are suggested for a quieter visit.

There are coffee docks and a restaurant on site, but food choices inside are limited. Bring snacks if you need them, and use the lockers for coats and bags. The centre is inside the Odyssey complex, where parking is available; account for parking costs when planning your trip. W5 has an accessible entrance, toilets and parking.
