Lekki Conservation Centre
Foresta

Lekki Conservation Centre

The Lekki Conservation Centre sits on the Lekki Peninsula in Lagos.

The Lekki Conservation Centre sits on the Lekki Peninsula in Lagos. The 78-hectare reserve covers swamp, savannah and mangrove, and the Nigerian Conservation Foundation runs it. Boardwalks lead through these habitats, and the reserve is set apart from the city's noise. The main draw is the canopy walkway, about 401 metres long and reaching 22.5 metres above the ground, with views over the treetops. Mona monkeys, crocodiles and birds live here. Allow a few hours, and keep a respectful distance from the animals.

History and purpose of the reserve

Lekki Conservation Centre
Lekki Conservation Centre

The Nigerian Conservation Foundation (NCF) founded the centre in 1990 and runs it. The reserve was set up as the city began to spread into land where plants and animals lived, so its job is to keep natural habitat in place. It covers 78 hectares, or about 190 acres, and includes swamp, savannah and mangrove.

The centre also runs conservation education. Visitors can join programmes that explain how the reserve is protected, and the site has a conservation centre and a library. Guides at the start of the canopy walk can explain the conservation work and answer questions.

The canopy walkway in detail

The walk is about 401 metres long and rises to 22.5 metres above the ground at its highest point. A guide takes you to the start of the canopy, and after that you cross the suspended bridges on your own. There are several bridges, and they sway more when many people are on them at once. If you want to move at your own pace, you can go ahead of the group in line.

The middle section is the longest and highest stretch, and the ground feels far below. The walk has points where you can turn back, so decide before you reach that section. Once you reach the end, a boardwalk leads to open land.

Monkeys, crocodiles and other wildlife

Mona monkeys are usually the first animals people notice. They move through the trees and cross the paths, and they can bite when they feel threatened. Crocodiles, bush bucks, Maxwell duikers, giant rats, snakes and peacocks also live in the reserve, and an elderly tortoise is among the residents.

The tree house is a platform about 21 metres high. From it you can see the picnic area, the children's playground and much of the reserve. A swamp lookout gives a different view over the wetland.

Boardwalks and the nature trail

Raised boardwalks cross forest, wetland and mangrove. A nature trail of about 1.8 km gives a longer walk on foot, and coconut palms line part of the approach. The walking is moderate, with some slopes up and down.

The boardwalks are a good choice if you want to avoid the crowds on the canopy. They are also the best place to stop and look at the water and the birds.

Food, drinks and games

Near the end of the walk, the open land has several food and drink spots. Food on offer includes grilled fish, chicken with rice, and plantain. Drinks include fresh pineapple drink, malt and water. A piña colada is a cool option after the canopy walk.

The centre has life-size chess, ludo, draughts and snakes and ladders. There are picnic tables and a barbecue grill, so you can bring a meal to share if you prefer to eat outdoors.

Visiting with children and groups

The centre has a playground, slides, swings and a skateboarding area. There are also courts for basketball, volleyball and tennis. Kid-friendly hikes are part of the offer, and the site is listed as good for children and for birthday celebrations.

The entrance, restroom and parking are listed as wheelchair accessible. The canopy walk is suspended and moves underfoot, so it suits visitors who are comfortable with height.

FAQ

Is there an entry fee?

Yes. Entry is charged separately from the canopy walk, which is optional and costs extra. Amounts differ between sources, so check current prices with the centre before you go.

How long do you need?

Most visits take about two to three hours, including the canopy walk and a stroll on the boardwalks.

Can you camp overnight?

No. Overnight camping is not allowed, so the reserve is for day visits, day hikes and picnics.

Do you need to book tickets in advance?

Buying tickets in advance is recommended.

Is the canopy walk good for children?

Children enjoy the walk, and the centre has a playground, swings and kid-friendly hikes. The bridges sway when they are busy, so keep young children close to you on them.
