Stay in the center of Queenstown for a first trip, because restaurants and tour pickups are on foot. Choose Wānaka for Roys Peak and ski areas, Frankton for the airport, Arrowtown for autumn and quiet nights, and Glenorchy for the Routeburn Track. Most trips work best with two bases, not five.

How to choose a base in the Southern Lakes
Where you sleep in Queenstown and Wānaka decides how many hours you spend in a car. The Queenstown and Wānaka guide covers the region as a whole, and the New Zealand guide covers the rest of New Zealand. A first visit usually suits the center of Queenstown, while walkers and skiers who want quiet often prefer Wānaka. Frankton, Arrowtown and Glenorchy each solve a narrower problem.
Start with what your days are made of. If they revolve around restaurants, tour pickups and the lakefront, sleep in Queenstown. If they revolve around a single trailhead, such as the Routeburn Track or Roys Peak, sleep near it. If you arrive late or leave early by air, sleep near Queenstown Airport. Then weigh the season. Tourism New Zealand lists Queenstown as popular at any time of year, with skiing from winter through spring, and gives June to October as the snow season around Wānaka, so winter rooms near the ski roads fill first.
Finally, think about the car. Within the center of Queenstown you can walk, but the rest of this region is spread out. Glenorchy is about 45 minutes from Queenstown, Arrowtown about 20 minutes and Wānaka about 1 hour 10 minutes by road. Queenstown Airport lists a public bus service, taxis, rideshare, shuttles and car hire, so you can reach most bases without owning a car, but Glenorchy and the ski roads work much better with one.
The price bands below are rough guides for a double room per night: $ for a simple motel or hostel room, $$ for a mid-range hotel or apartment, $$$ for an upscale lodge or a prime central location. Rates swing with the season, so no figures are quoted; read the final total, including parking, before you pay.
1. Queenstown center
The center sits on the shore of Lake Wakatipu among alpine ranges, and Tourism New Zealand notes that staying downtown puts you close to the nightlife and many of the restaurants. For a stay of two to four nights it is the simplest base, because the waterfront, the shops and the departure points for most tours are within a walk. Coach tours to Milford Sound, for example, are listed with pickups at the Queenstown Visitor Centre on the waterfront at St Omers Wharf, and the operator says there are several parking options within 200 meters of it but none directly outside.
The trade-offs are cost, noise and parking. Central rooms tend to cost more than rooms further out, and rooms on the busiest streets can be loud late at night. Many central properties have limited or paid parking, so ask before you book if you are arriving in a rental car. If you plan to hire a car only for a day or two, collect it at the airport on the way out rather than paying for parking all week.
The center also makes sense in winter, when you want to leave a car behind and use shuttles to the ski areas. Tourism New Zealand names Coronet Peak and The Remarkables as the commercial ski areas near Queenstown, and says Coronet Peak has the shortest drive from town. Check each ski area's own site for current opening dates and transport options before you plan around them.

2. Frankton
Frankton is the suburb beside Queenstown Airport, which the airport lists at Sir Henry Wigley Drive. It is the practical base for a late flight, an early departure or a trip that starts and ends with a rental car. The airport's own site lists the Orbus public bus service, taxis and rideshare, shuttles and campervan and car hire, so you rarely need to arrange anything special to reach your room.
The advantage is access. If your plan includes driving to Wānaka, Arrowtown or Te Anau, you start close to the roads you need. Tourism New Zealand describes the Crown Range turnoff as clearly marked just past Lake Hayes, which is on the way out of town to the east, so a Frankton base shortens the first leg of a day that crosses the range. For a first night after a long flight, being near the airport is also a comfort.
The limit is atmosphere. Frankton is a working area with shops and services rather than a lakefront walk, so you will drive or take the bus into the center for dinner and activities. If you want to see the lake and the mountains from your window and walk to a restaurant, the center or Arrowtown will feel more like a holiday.

If you want a Frankton base, this four-star stay is 1.1 km from the centre

3. Arrowtown
Arrowtown is a gold-rush village on the Arrow River, about 20 minutes from central Queenstown, according to Tourism New Zealand. The town was established in 1862, and more than 60 of the cottages, shops, hotels and churches built then can still be seen. The Chinese settlement at the edge of the river, built by Chinese miners from 1868, and the Lakes District Museum on Buckingham Street are the main sights, and the town has cafes, restaurants, bars and small shops. The listing gives an approximate population of 2,200 and notes that there is an information center and fuel.
The strongest reason to stay is autumn. In April and May the deciduous trees turn, and the Akarua Arrowtown Autumn Festival is held in the last week of April. If those dates fit your trip, book early, because the whole village is a good base for the festival. Outside autumn, Arrowtown suits couples and drivers who prefer a village feel to the busier town, and it is a short drive from the Crown Range road.
The limit is the car. Arrowtown has no real nightlife, so a night out in Queenstown means a drive or taxi, and public transport is thinner than in the center. Plan on a rental car if you stay here for more than one night.

4. Wānaka
Wānaka sits on a lake that is 45 kilometers long, with Mount Aspiring National Park, a World Heritage area, close by. Tourism New Zealand lists four ski areas within a short drive in winter: Treble Cone, Cardrona, Snow Farm and the private Soho Basin. In summer the same listing points to hundreds of kilometers of tracks for hiking and biking. The town has a lakefront cafe scene, a farmers market, craft breweries and wineries, and it is the base for Roys Peak.
Check the Roys Peak dates before you plan around it. The Department of Conservation closes the track from 1 October to 10 November each year for lambing and reopens it on 11 November, and suggests Isthmus Peak Track as a similar alternative. If your trip falls inside the closure, the other walks and the lake still make the town worthwhile, but build the plan around them. The Roys Peak car park is about 6 kilometers from town and is often full, so staying close lets you start early.
Wānaka works well as a second base after Queenstown rather than a first. Many trips use both: three nights at one and two at the other. The drive between them is about 1 hour 10 minutes, and the road choice matters; see Queenstown or Wānaka for the comparison and the Wānaka guide for the walks and ski areas.

A good pick if lakefront cafes and Roys Peak matter more than Queenstown nightlife.

5. Glenorchy
Glenorchy is a small community of about 500 residents at the head of Lake Wakatipu. Tourism New Zealand describes it as an access point for the Routeburn Track and a base for jet boating on the Dart River, horse riding, 4WD photo safaris and film locations from The Lord of the Rings. Bennett's Bluff, the first full view of the head of the lake on the drive from Queenstown, and the Red Boat Shed at the wharf are the best-known stops.
The reason to sleep here is the trailhead. The Routeburn Track is 33 kilometers one way, and the Great Walks season, when bookings are required for huts and campsites, runs from 1 November 2026 to 30 April 2027. You do not have to stay in Glenorchy to hike a day section, but sleeping near the track avoids a 45 minute drive at each end of a long day. Accommodation ranges from camping and an eco lodge to alpine lodges and a luxury property, so the price band is wide.
The limit is services. With about 500 residents, shops and restaurants are few, so bring groceries or plan to eat where you sleep. Daylight and weather matter on the road, so do not drive the lake road in poor conditions without checking.

Booking tips and mistakes to avoid
Book earliest for the periods you cannot move. Winter ski weeks, the Arrowtown autumn festival in the last week of April and any Great Walk dates are the main pinch points, so reserve rooms as soon as your flights are fixed. Tourism New Zealand says Queenstown is popular all year, and that means shoulder periods are not always cheap. Choose a rate with free cancellation until you have booked flights, a rental car and any tour that has a fixed departure.
Do not combine a Milford Sound day trip with a distant base unless you want a very long day. Queenstown to Milford and back is 600 kilometers and 12 to 14 hours, the Department of Conservation says, and it recommends returning from Te Anau. If Milford Sound is the highlight of your trip, a night in Te Anau, about 2 hours 10 minutes from Queenstown by road, changes the day completely. The Milford Sound from Queenstown guide compares the coach, drive and flight options.
Match your base to your transport. If you rely on buses and taxis, stay in the center or Frankton. If you hire a car, Arrowtown, Wānaka and Glenorchy open up, but ask each property about parking, and check whether your rental company's insurance covers the unsealed road you plan to use. The guide to renting a car abroad explains the excess and insurance questions to settle first.
Finally, do not try to see everything from one base. A split stay of Queenstown and Wānaka costs one packing day and saves hours of daily driving. Add data and cover before you go: an eSIM helps for maps on the Crown Range, and travel insurance should be checked for snow sports, adventure activities and weather cancellations.
Which base wins for your trip?
For a first trip of three or four nights, the center of Queenstown wins on convenience, even if it costs more. For a trip built around hiking, with Roys Peak and Mount Aspiring on the list, Wānaka wins. For a road trip that starts and ends at the airport, Frankton wins on logistics, and for a quiet autumn weekend with a car, Arrowtown wins on atmosphere. For the Routeburn Track or Dart River, Glenorchy wins, but only if you accept a small community and a longer drive for everything else.
The honest advice is to choose two bases, not five. Pair Queenstown with Wānaka, or Queenstown with Glenorchy for a Routeburn night, and use day trips for the rest. If you are still deciding between the two main towns, the Queenstown or Wānaka page compares them by season, and the five-day itinerary shows how a split stay works day by day.
Domande frequenti
Where is the best place to stay in Queenstown?
The town center for a first visit, since restaurants, the lakefront and tour pickups are within a walk. Choose Frankton for the airport, Arrowtown for a quiet village, or Glenorchy for the Routeburn Track.
Should I stay in Queenstown or Wānaka?
Queenstown for the widest choice of activities and nightlife, Wānaka for a quieter lake town near Roys Peak and Mount Aspiring. The drive between them is about 1 hour 10 minutes, so a split stay works well.
Is Arrowtown a good base for Queenstown?
Yes if you have a car and like a village feel. It is about 20 minutes from Queenstown, with historic cottages and autumn color in April and May, but it has no nightlife of its own.
Where should I stay for the Routeburn Track?
Glenorchy is the access point, about 45 minutes from Queenstown. Great Walk huts and campsites need bookings from 1 November 2026 to 30 April 2027, so book the track before you fix rooms.
Do I need a car in Queenstown and Wānaka?
Not in the center of either town, but yes for Glenorchy, Arrowtown on your own schedule and most trailheads. Queenstown Airport lists a public bus, taxis, rideshare, shuttles and car hire.
