Look out for Fred and Myrtle’s Pāua Shell House and the gold-plated Jawa motorcycle ridden by Ivan Mauger. Entry is free, and the pop-up is close to the Botanic Gardens, so it fits well before or after a walk there.

A museum in transition

Canterbury Museum
Canterbury Museum

Canterbury Museum began in 1867, first displaying geological specimens collected by Dr Julius von Haast and Dr Ferdinand Hochstetter. It moved to its present historic premises on Rolleston Avenue in 1870. The museum’s collections have grown to cover the natural and human history of Canterbury and New Zealand, including Māori taonga, fossils, Asian arts, European settlement and Antarctic exploration.

The Rolleston Avenue building is undergoing redevelopment. In the meantime, the museum’s pop-up space at 66 Gloucester Street presents selected highlights from its collections, alongside temporary exhibitions. It gives you a smaller-scale museum visit, rather than access to the full range of galleries at the main site.

What to look for inside

The pop-up displays bring together subjects that connect Canterbury with the wider natural and cultural history of New Zealand. Depending on the exhibitions on show, you may find Māori history, natural science and dinosaur material. One family-friendly display includes bug drawers and magnification, which let children examine insects closely.

Fred and Myrtle’s Pāua Shell House is another distinctive exhibit. The recreated lounge recalls the couple’s home, known for its walls covered in pāua shells. A gold-plated Jawa 500cc motorcycle associated with New Zealand speedway rider Ivan Mauger has also appeared in the pop-up’s displays. Exhibitions can change, so check the museum’s website for what is currently on view.

A short stop near the gardens

The museum’s Gloucester Street location is close to the Botanic Gardens, making it easy to combine the two on foot. The pop-up is suited to a brief visit: one estimate puts the time needed at around 30 minutes to an hour, depending on how long you spend with the exhibits and activities.

Entry is free, with donations welcomed. For a quieter visit, choose a weekday or arrive early. If you are visiting with children, leave time for the interactive displays, including the bug drawers. The pop-up represents only selected parts of the museum’s wider collection, so check the current exhibition information before you go.
