Which Budva beach should you choose?

The Budva Riviera has too many beaches to try in one trip, and the names on a map say little about what each is like. The national tourism board gives lengths for the main ones, from a cove of about 150 m to a strand of about 2,000 m, and describes the Riviera's beaches as sandy and pebble, stretching for 38 km in total. The Budva travel guide covers the town, and the Montenegro guide covers the country.

The short answer: pick Slovenian Beach (about 1,600 m) for convenience and buses, Bečići (about 2,000 m) for a long resort beach, Jaz (1,000 m) for an open strand away from the center, and the smaller coves, Richard's Head (about 150 m), Pržno (about 260 m) and King's Beach (about 280 m), for a quieter swim that fills early. Sveti Stefan has a two-part beach of 700 m and 400 m with a famous view. In July and August, arrive in the morning, because the tourism board counts about 100,000 swimmers a day on the Riviera.

The long beaches: Slovenska, Bečići and Jaz

Slovenian Beach is the one most visitors meet first, because it runs beside central Budva. The tourism board gives it as about 1,600 m, which means space for loungers, restaurants behind the sand and buses at the back. It is the easiest beach to reach on foot from the center, and the easiest to combine with the old town, the port and supermarkets. The price of that convenience is crowds: on a July weekend, the sand near the center fills by mid-morning.

Bečići lies east of the center and is the longest on the list at about 2,000 m. Resort hotels line the seafront, and the promenade behind the sand holds cafes and rented loungers. A long beach spreads people out, so the far ends are calmer than the middle. If you stay in a Bečići hotel, you will probably swim in front of it and treat the beach as an extension of the lobby. The where to stay in Budva guide compares Bečići with the center and the coves.

Jaz is 1,000 m long and sits apart from the center, in a bay that has hosted large concerts. The tourism board lists Jaz among the main beaches and notes that the coast's beaches have hosted many world stars. On concert days it can be loud and crowded, and on quiet days it is an open strand with room to move. Check the local event calendar before you plan a day there, and do not count on buses late at night.

The small coves: Richard's Head, Pržno and King's Beach

Small beaches suit travelers who dislike crowds on the sand but will accept crowds on a smaller patch. Richard's Head is about 150 m long, King's Beach about 280 m and Pržno about 260 m, per the board. They fill earlier in the day than the long strands, so arrive in the morning or plan an evening swim. In peak months you may share a cove with a hotel's guests, so look at the layout before you spread a towel.

King's Beach has a royal story: the tourism board says the Karadjordjević royal family chose to build a summer residence there, and describes the beach as sandy, pebbly and, in places, rocky. That description matters for your feet. If you plan to swim at King's Beach or Pržno, bring swim shoes, because rocky entries and pebbles are common on this coast. The coves also suit snorkeling on a calm day, but check the sea conditions and the signs first.

These beaches pair well with a rental car or a taxi. The coves lie toward Sveti Stefan, so a half day that starts with a cove swim, continues to the island viewpoint and ends with lunch in Petrovac is a good use of a morning. The Petrovac guide explains why that beach is quieter than the Riviera's main strands.

Sveti Stefan and Petrovac

The beach at Sveti Stefan comes in two parts, a larger one of 700 m and a smaller one of 400 m, on either side of the isthmus that joins the island to the mainland. The tourism board lists celebrities who have holidayed here. The operator of the island resort describes the islet as a private island, so plan to see it from the sand and the viewpoints, and check the resort's current visitor terms before you plan to cross the isthmus. The beach is a pleasant half-day stop, but it is the setting, not the sand, that people come for.

Petrovac is a small town south of Budva, with a city beach of about 600 m, slightly reddish sand and the islets of Katič and Sveta Nedelja just offshore. It is the calm option on this list: a town beach with a promenade behind it, no big concert venue and a pace that suits a quiet week. The tourism board also lists Buljarica nearby as a coastal bird-watching spot.

Swim safety on the Riviera

The Riviera is a busy coast, and UK advice gives a clear list of precautions. Take note of warning signs on beaches, follow the instructions of lifeguards and observe the flag indicators. Take local advice if jellyfish or sea urchins are present. Speedboats and other watercraft operate frequently along the coast, particularly in summer, so remain aware of vessels nearby and use designated swimming areas where available.

The same advice covers jet-skis and quad bikes. When renting a jet-ski, get a safety briefing and clear instructions about where you can and cannot ride, and make sure you have the right licence and insurance. Before signing up for a paragliding flight, ask the instructor to show a tandem training licence. A travel insurance policy that lists your planned activities is worth reading before you rent anything with an engine.

Planning around heat, crowds and rain

The sea is warm enough for swimming from late spring to early autumn. The tourism board gives a bathing season of 180 days and a maximum sea temperature of 27.1 °C. June and September give the best balance of warm water and room. July and August bring the heat and the crowds. May and October suit walks more than swims.

Plan beach time for the morning, when the sand is quiet and the sun is gentler. Spend the hot afternoon in the old town's shade, at a lunch table or on a boat. For a rainy day, the old town and the citadel are good in any weather, and Kotor is a short ride away for lanes, a cathedral and the fortress path. The Kotor or Budva guide helps if the weather pushes you to swap beaches for sights.

Choose by who you travel with

Families with young children should favor the long, shallow-feeling resort beaches, because space and facilities matter more than scenery. Bečići and Slovenian Beach offer room to spread out, restaurants behind the sand and buses at the back, and the small coves are harder with toddlers because entry points can be rocky. Check each hotel's walk to the water and whether the path has steps, since a stair with a stroller changes a day.

Couples tend to prefer the coves and the Sveti Stefan side, where evenings are calmer and the setting does more of the work. A morning at King's Beach, lunch near Miločer and an evening in Petrovac make a slower rhythm than a day on the central strand. Groups of friends usually want the center, where bars, buses and beach clubs are within walking distance, and where a late return does not need a taxi.

Travelers without a car should stay close to the beach they want. Buses along the coast reach the main areas, but timetables thin out in the evening, and the small coves can be a longer walk than the map suggests. If you plan to move between beaches during the week, a rental car or a pre-arranged taxi pays for itself. Travelers who want quiet should note that sound carries from beach bars and events, so ask your hotel which sections of the beach host music and when.

Mistakes to avoid

The most common error is judging a beach by its name instead of its length and its surface. The second is arriving at a small cove at noon in August. The third is walking into the water without swim shoes on a pebble or rocky entry. The fourth is ignoring flags and boat traffic. The fifth is planning a Jaz day without checking for events. The last is carrying only cards: Montenegro uses the euro, and cash helps for small cafes, loungers and buses.

Plan the rest of your trip

Set up an eSIM for Montenegro before you fly, and read the Montenegro entry rules for passport and registration steps. The airport to Budva guide covers the transfer, and the Adriatic Coast planner shows how Budva fits with Kotor, Petrovac and Ulcinj, where Long Beach runs for 13 km according to the board.
