Stay in Zona Romantica for a first trip, because the beach, restaurants and bars are walkable. Choose Centro and the Malecon for the seafront and culture, the Hotel Zone and Marina for resorts near the airport, and Conchas Chinas for quiet coves and views. Sayulita is a separate surf-town trip, not a neighborhood.

How to choose
Puerto Vallarta wraps around Banderas Bay, with the old town in the middle, resorts to the north and rocky coves to the south. Where you sleep decides how much of your trip is spent walking to dinner, riding taxis or waiting for a bay boat. The Puerto Vallarta travel guide covers the sights, and this page settles the base. For a longer route, the Mexico guide shows how the bay fits with the Pacific coast.
Three things decide the choice. The first is how you want to spend evenings: on foot among restaurants and bars, or at a resort or villa with a pool. The second is whether you want a beach at your door or are happy to ride to one. The third is how long you stay. For two or three nights, central and walkable usually wins. For a week, a quieter base with a pool can be worth the taxi rides.
Rates are shown as relative bands per night for a double: $ for a simple hotel or apartment, $$ for mid-range, $$$ for a resort or boutique property. High season runs from December to March, and June to October is cheaper but rainy and humid.
1. Zona Romantica
Zona Romantica, also called Old Town, sits south of the Río Cuale. Its center is Playa Los Muertos, a town beach with a pier, restaurants and bars along the sand. Streets behind it hold a dense grid of cafés, galleries and small hotels, and everything is walkable. It is the best base for a first trip.
The trade-offs are noise and slopes. Music from the beachfront can carry late, and some streets climb steeply, so a room on a hill means stairs. Choose a property a few blocks from the beach if you need quiet, and ask about the walk if you travel with a stroller or have mobility needs.
With dinner a short walk away, a room-only rate usually makes sense. Many travelers pair Zona Romantica with a day trip to Sayulita or a boat to the south shore.

2. Centro and the Malecon
Centro is the traditional downtown, north of the river, with the seafront promenade called the Malecon, a cathedral, galleries and plazas. Sculptures line the waterfront, and the area fills in the evening when families and visitors walk the sea wall. It suits travelers who like culture, a calmer pace than the beach strip, and a walk along the water.
Beaches here are small compared with Playa Los Muertos, so a beach day usually means a short walk or taxi ride south. The streets back from the Malecon feel more local, with markets and taquerías, and some hotels are in older buildings with courtyards.
It works well for a short stay, a return visit or a trip focused on food and art. It works less well for those who want long mornings on the sand without leaving the block.

If you don't mind staying 1.7 km from Centro and the Malecon, this could suit you

3. Hotel Zone and Marina
North of downtown, the Hotel Zone and Marina Vallarta hold large resorts, a marina boardwalk with restaurants and golf. It is close to the airport, which makes it a convenient first or last stop. Families and travelers who want a pool, a kids' program and everything on property often prefer it.
The trade-off is walkability. Restaurants and nightlife outside the resorts are a taxi or bus ride away, and the area has less of the cobbled-street feel of the old town. It can feel like any resort district.
Many visitors split a week, with a few nights here for pool time and a few nights in Zona Romantica for evenings out.

4. Conchas Chinas
Conchas Chinas is a hillside stretch south of Zona Romantica, with small rocky coves, villas and boutique hotels set above the sea. It suits couples and travelers who want quiet mornings, sunset terraces and a private feel. Water in the coves can be calm on some days, but rocks and surf vary, so check conditions before you swim.
Getting around takes a taxi or a bus. A taxi into Zona Romantica for dinner is short, and the road along the coast leads on to Mismaloya and Boca de Tomatlan, where boats leave for the south shore villages. The area is quiet after dark.
It is a good choice for a second stay after you have seen the town, or for a honeymoon-style trip.

For a Conchas Chinas stay, this four-star option is 1.3 km from the area centre

What about the Nayarit coast?
North of the airport, the Nayarit side of the bay has its own resort towns and beach villages, including Sayulita. They are not neighborhoods of Puerto Vallarta, and a stay there is a different trip with a longer ride back to the old town. If you are weighing a surf-town base, read Puerto Vallarta or Sayulita before you book, and see the Sayulita guide for the town itself.
Mistakes to avoid when you book
The first mistake is reading "Old Town" as one neighborhood. Zona Romantica, south of the river, and Centro, north of it, are different places with different beaches, and a hotel advertised as "Old Town" can be in either. Check which side of the Río Cuale the property sits on, and count the blocks to Playa Los Muertos.
The second is ignoring hills. Zona Romantica climbs steeply behind the beach, and a room with a view often means a long set of steps or a steep cobbled street, which is hard with a stroller, a heavy suitcase or a bad knee. Ask for the street name and read reviews about access. The third is booking the Hotel Zone for the old-town nightlife and then paying for a taxi each evening. If restaurants and bars are the plan, stay where you can walk to them.
The fourth is booking Conchas Chinas for a first night after a late flight. The road south is a taxi ride of about half an hour from the airport, and the area has few restaurants within walking distance, so a first night in Zona Romantica or near the airport is easier. The fifth is booking the cheapest rate in the wet season without a refund option. Heavy rain and storms can close boats and roads for a day or more, and a flexible rate costs little compared with a lost trip.
Walking, hills and getting around from each base
Most bases let you do the old town on foot, and the difference is what happens outside it. From Zona Romantica, the Malecón is a walk across the Río Cuale bridges, and Playa Los Muertos is a few minutes away. From Centro, the same walk runs in the other direction. From the Hotel Zone, you will take a bus or taxi to the old town, which is fine if you use it twice but wearing if you use it nightly. From Conchas Chinas, plan on a taxi for almost everything except the cove below your hotel.
Puerto Vallarta's taxis do not always use meters, so agree the fare before you get in, and ask your hotel for the usual price between your base and the old town. Local buses are the cheapest way along the bay, and water taxis reach the south-shore villages from Boca de Tomatlán on the south road, which makes Conchas Chinas the closest base to that pier. If you plan a boat day, check where it leaves before you pick a base.
When to stay where: the calendar
The dry months from about November to April are the busiest. The official Puerto Vallarta tourism board lists the humpback whale season in Banderas Bay as December through March, and those weeks are when the best rooms sell out. The wet months, from about June to October, bring heat, humidity and afternoon rain. The US National Hurricane Center lists the eastern Pacific hurricane season as 15 May to 30 November, with activity peaking in late August and most systems between late June and early October, so September and early October are the riskiest weeks for a beach trip.
In the wet months, a walkable base with a pool and an indoor option nearby matters more than a view. In the dry months, a base near the sand matters more, and rooms near the beach cost more. If your dates are flexible, the shoulder weeks at the start of November and in April often give dry weather at lower prices, though that depends on the year.
Booking tips for Puerto Vallarta
Book early for December to March, when dry weather and whale season fill the best rooms. Easter and Christmas weeks are the tightest. June to October is cheaper but hot, humid and rainy, and storm risk peaks in late summer and early autumn, so pick a flexible rate and consider travel insurance for Mexico.
Check what is included. All-inclusive rates cover meals and drinks in the resort, while many boutique hotels include breakfast only. Resort fees and taxes can appear at checkout, so compare the final total.
Set up data with an eSIM for Mexico before you land. If you are unsure whether to stay in the bay or in the surf town to the north, read Puerto Vallarta or Sayulita, and see Puerto Vallarta in 4 days for how a base shapes the days.
