The Red Tower, officially St Agatha’s Tower, is a 17th-century fortification on a ridge above Mellieħa Bay in northern Malta. Built by the Order of St John in 1649, it served as a coastal lookout and signal point. Inside, a short video and written information introduce the tower’s history; the climb to the roof is the main draw, with broad views over northern Malta, the coastline, Gozo and Comino. Nearby trails make it easy to pair the visit with a walk.

The Red Tower

The Red Tower is officially named St Agatha’s Tower, and is also known in Maltese as Torri L-Aħmar. It stands on a ridge above Mellieħa Bay, in the Marfa area of northern Malta. Its red-painted walls make it easy to pick out against the surrounding rocky landscape.

The Order of St John built the tower in 1649 as part of Malta’s coastal defences. Its position gave sentries a view of potential landing sites in the north and the crossing towards Gozo. The tower also formed part of a signalling network: messages could be relayed to nearby islands using beacons. Its strategic position was important enough that it continued to have a military role over the centuries, including use as a communication post during the Second World War.

Inside the tower

The interior is compact, so the visit is focused on the building’s history rather than a large collection of displays. A short video and written information explain the tower’s background, with information available in several languages. The original floor and walls can also be seen inside.

The tower’s thick walls were built to withstand cannon fire. Historical accounts describe it as a garrison fortification, staffed and supplied in case of siege. Its castle-like form sets it apart from smaller coastal watchtowers, while its location connects the building to the wider network of defences around Malta.

The rooftop view

The climb to the roof is the main reason to go inside. From the top, the view takes in Mellieħa Bay and the northern coastline, with Gozo and Comino visible across the water. On a clear day, the elevated position gives a broad panorama of the surrounding countryside and sea.

The tower also sits near walking routes, including Natura 2000 trails and paths through the surrounding landscape. You can make the tower a short stop on a wider walk, or combine it with time in Mellieħa. Check the tower’s website before travelling to confirm visitor access, and allow time for the approach if you plan to walk uphill.
