Golden Bay

Golden Bay is a sandy beach on Malta’s north-west coast, framed by cliffs and hills. The golden shoreline and clear water draw people here to swim, relax and watch the sun set over the bay. Trails along the cliffs add coastal views to a beach day, and nearby cafés, restaurants, restrooms and sunbed and umbrella rentals make it easier to stay awhile. The beach gets busy during peak periods, so arrive early or late in the day, or choose a quieter month for a more peaceful visit.

The beach and its setting

Golden Bay, also known as Il-Bajja tal-Mixquqa, lies on Malta’s north-west coast. Golden sand meets clear blue water, with cliffs and ridges framing the bay. The open coastal views are a draw in their own right, especially as the light changes towards sunset.

You can spend your time swimming, relaxing on the sand or following trails along the cliffs. The paths lead to higher viewpoints over the coastline, so bring suitable footwear if you plan to walk beyond the beach. Nearby cafés and restaurants, restrooms and rentals for sunbeds and umbrellas make it possible to combine a walk with a longer beach stop.

Choosing when to go

Golden Bay is popular and can become crowded, particularly during peak summer periods and from late morning into early afternoon. An early arrival or a visit later in the day gives you a quieter window; sunset is a good time to take in the view over the bay. February to March and September to October are also suggested for a less busy visit.

The shoreline and surrounding area can have litter, so take your rubbish away with you. If you want extra comfort on the sand, sunbeds and umbrellas can be rented nearby. Cafés and restaurants around the beach provide places to get a drink or a meal.
