In breve

Take the train from Riga Central toward Tukums, Ķemeri or Sloka and get off at Majori for the beach and Jomas iela; the listed ride is about 30 minutes. Drivers pay a daily entry pass of €5 at the city limits. Choose Sigulda or Rundāle instead if you want castles over sand, and check the winter timetable first.

Jūrmala from Riga: the short answer

Jūrmala is the easy coastal escape from the capital, and a day is enough for it. From the Riga travel guide you can follow the rail line west to a resort strip with quartz-sand beaches, wooden villas and forest parks, and be back by evening. For the wider picture, the Latvia guide shows where the coast sits in the country.

The short version: go by train from Riga Central, get off at Majori for the beach and the pedestrian street, and plan around the weather. If you drive, budget for a daily entry pass. If you only have one dry day in a longer Riga stay, spend it here and keep the museums, described in Riga in 2 days, for the wet one.

The official Jūrmala tourism site describes the resort as the central 24-kilometer stretch of the Gulf of Riga coast. It lies about 20 km west of Riga along the A10/E22 highway, and the same site says the trip takes just under an hour from the city center. That makes it a half-day trip for a quick swim or a full day with a villa walk and a long lunch.

Train, car, bus or boat: how to get there

The train is the sensible default. Passenger trains to Jūrmala leave Riga Central Station from tracks 3 and 4 on platform 4, and you look for services toward Tukums, Ķemeri or Sloka. The line runs through the whole of Jūrmala with 14 stops inside the city limits, and there is no station called Jūrmala. The official tourism site lists a ride of 20 to 50 minutes, depending on the stop, and fares of €2.30 to €2.80; Riga to Majori takes 30 minutes and costs €2.30. You can buy at the counters in the main ticket hall, or from the conductor for a slightly higher price, and a bicycle needs its own baggage ticket.

Check the timetable before you go. Vivi, the passenger rail operator, posted a notice that from 5 October the Riga to Dubulti route runs a winter timetable, with some weekend and midweek trips canceled. A separate notice says the timetable on the Sigulda line changes for repair work from the same date. Treat any timetable as seasonal and confirm on the Vivi site or app on the day.

If you drive, the A10/E22 takes you in, and every car entering the city limits pays a daily fee of €5 at toll points in Priedaine, when arriving from Riga, or Vaivari, when arriving from Tukums. The official site says the pass must be bought by 23:59 on the day of entry, may be bought before or after you enter, and can be paid by app, online, at machines or at the tourist office on Lienes iela 5. Since 1 January 2026, machines no longer accept cash. Public parking in Jūrmala is free, and there is free parking at the Majori car park next to the tourist office.

The other options are slower. A minibus leaves from the Riga International Bus Terminal at Prāgas iela 1 and takes around 30 minutes to Majori. In summer, a river ferry or boat runs from the Daugava landing in Riga and takes 2.5 hours each way, which suits a scenic trip rather than a quick one. Cyclists can follow the 20-kilometer EuroVelo 10 route that starts at Vanšu Bridge and runs beside the railway tracks to the city limits.

Which stop to choose

Choose the stop by the kind of day you want. Majori is the center of the resort and the right default. The pedestrian Jomas iela, which the tourism site calls the heart of Jūrmala, has cafés, shops and street performers in all seasons, and the central Majori beach is a short walk away. The tourist information center is at Lienes iela 5 and lists opening hours of 09:00 to 17:00 on weekdays, 10:00 to 17:00 on Saturday and 10:00 to 15:00 on Sunday.

Dzintari, the stop beside Majori, is for music and forest. The Dzintari concert hall opened in 1936 and has a larger open-air hall built in 1960; the same site lists the Dzintari forest park with a viewing tower, playgrounds and, in winter, a Park of Light. Dubulti suits quieter streets of wooden villas, and the tourism site's wooden architecture guide highlights Jūras iela, in Majori and Dzintari, as the most representative axis of ornate villas.

Ķemeri, at the end of the line, is for nature. The Ķemeri Resort Park dates from the 19th century and holds a 42-meter water tower from 1929. The Ķemeri National Park, established in 1997, covers 38,165 hectares and offers boardwalk trails such as the Great Ķemeri Bog Boardwalk. These are walking days, so wear waterproof shoes. FCDO notes that tick bites occur during the warm season, between March and October, and can carry encephalitis or Lyme disease, so cover your legs on forest and bog trails and check your skin afterward.

Beach, villas and what to do

The beach is the headline. The official guide describes calm, slightly salty waves, quartz sand and a forested dune coast along almost the entire length, with beaches that change character every few hundred meters. It lists 11 beaches, divided into active and quiet recreation zones, and a shallow sea suited to wading. Water quality at the official Gulf of Riga bathing sites is tested twice a month in the swimming season, and ten of the eleven official bathing sites in the Gulf have excellent long-term quality, according to the same guide.

Majori beach has a lifeguard station and a nearly kilometer-long illuminated promenade. The rules are strict: smoking, pets, overnight stays and camping are prohibited on the beaches. Bring a towel and a windbreak, because the Baltic can be breezy even on a warm day, and note that water sports facilities are not offered at Majori beach itself.

If the weather is poor, the villas are the better draw. Jūrmala lists 385 officially protected architectural monuments and more than 700 culturally and historically valuable buildings, according to the tourism site, and its wooden architecture guide describes a walking route from Vaivari to Lielupe. In Majori, the Art Nouveau Sea Pavilion on Tirgoņu iela and the former bathing house on Pilsoņu iela are on the beach side. The Jūrmala Museum and the open-air museum, a coastal fisherman's household from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, are listed in the official top ten for slower days.

A relaxed one-day plan

Take a morning train, ideally before 10:00, so you reach Majori with a full day. Walk Jomas iela for coffee, then head to the beach for a walk along the promenade rather than a long swim unless the weather is warm. Eat lunch at a beach café or a restaurant on Jomas iela, then walk or ride one stop to Dzintari for the forest park and the concert hall, or take a villa walk along Jūras iela.

In the late afternoon, return to the beach for the light, then catch an evening train. Check the last departure when you buy your ticket, and leave a buffer in the off-season when services are less frequent. If you want a quieter variant, replace the beach with a Ķemeri walk and keep Majori for dinner.

In autumn, winter and bad weather

Jūrmala works year-round, but the experience changes. In summer the beaches are lively and the concert hall is active. In the cold months the sea is bleak, and FCDO warns that winter in Latvia, from October to March, can be extremely cold, with temperatures that may fall to minus 25°C or lower. In that period the resort is about spas, forest walks, villas and warm cafés, and the Dzintari forest park becomes a Park of Light, according to the tourism site. Dress for wind, and treat the shoreline as a short walk rather than a day plan.

On a wet day, switch to the museum, a long lunch or a spa; the official site lists pools, saunas and sanatoriums among its health and spa options. Or simply save Jūrmala for a drier day and do the Old Town instead.

Jūrmala, Sigulda or Rundāle?

Jūrmala is the shortest, cheapest and flattest day trip, and the right choice if you want sand, wooden villas and an easy return. Sigulda and the Gauja National Park suit a more active day. The park's visitor site says the Riga to Valga rail line passes through the park and connects Riga, Sigulda, Cēsis and Valmiera throughout the day, with buses to Sigulda, Cēsis and Valmiera about once an hour. It lists castles, river valley trails and cycling routes, so plan boots rather than a swimsuit and read the tick warning above.

Rundāle Palace is the cultural pick. According to its official site it lies 67 km from Riga by road to Bauska and 12 km beyond, with a direct bus listed from Riga. October hours are 10:00 to 18:00 for the museum and the French garden, and from November to April the museum runs 10:00 to 17:00 and is closed on 1 January, 24 December and 25 December. Pick it if palaces matter more than the sea, and allow a full day.

A guided tour makes sense for Sigulda and Rundāle if you do not want to plan bus connections, because both involve more transfers than the coast. For Jūrmala, a tour is rarely worth it: the train is simple and cheap.

Border areas and checks

Jūrmala, Sigulda and Rundāle are all far from the eastern frontier, but if your plans stretch beyond them, some rules apply. Latvia is in the Schengen area, and non-EU visitors are registered under the Entry/Exit System at their first Schengen border, as covered in EES explained. Days count toward the Schengen 90/180 rule, and travelers who are not exempt must also file Latvia's online travel declaration 48 hours before entry.

The Latvian State Border Guard says a borderland no wider than two kilometers runs along the external land border, and that people aged 15 or over need a special permit from the Border Guard to stay in it. FCDO adds that access within 2 km of the Belarus border is limited, that the Silene-Urbani road crossing is closed and that more checkpoints may close at short notice. Do not drive to a border area for sightseeing without a permit, and follow instructions from the authorities. Day trips from Riga do not go near the frontier.

For crossings with Latvia's neighbors, the European Commission's list of temporary internal border controls, checked on 4 October 2026, has no entry for Latvia, Estonia or Lithuania. It does list Poland, with checks from 2 October 2026 to 30 March 2027 on its land borders with Germany and Lithuania. If you continue by coach or car from the Baltics to Poland, carry your passport and expect a possible stop at the Lithuania to Poland crossing. For onward routes, Vilnius is the usual next stop, and the Estonia guide covers the north.

Mistakes to avoid

The first is getting off the train at a stop that suits neither the beach nor the walk; Majori is the safe default. The second is driving in without buying the entry pass, which must be bought by 23:59 on the day of entry; the official page lists the payment options. The third is trusting a summer timetable in October: Vivi has announced a winter schedule for Riga to Dubulti services and changes on the Sigulda line. The fourth is planning a Ķemeri boardwalk in sandals or without tick protection. The fifth is leaving Riga late and missing the last convenient train back.

Check your insurance before you go: travel insurance covers delays and theft, and a local data plan, compared in the Europe eSIM roundup, keeps timetable apps working on the platform. For other transfers around the region, see the transport guides.
