The Treasury, known locally as Al-Khazneh, is the carved facade at the far end of the Siq, the narrow canyon that leads into Petra in Jordan. The tomb front was cut straight into the rock more than 2,000 years ago, and its columns, statues and decoration are still well preserved. Sunlight gives the sandstone soft pink and deep red tones through the day. Arrive early for quieter moments, and take time to look at the detail before you move on.
A tomb carved into sandstone

The Treasury is a tomb facade cut into the rock face of Petra. Its style is Hellenistic, and it is carved from iron-laden sandstone. The tomb is linked to the Nabataean King Aretas III.
The name comes from a local story. It says an Egyptian pharaoh hid his treasure in the urn at the top of the facade while pursuing the Israelites. The urn is still visible at the top of the carving.
The walk through the Siq

The Siq is a narrow canyon that leads from the park entrance to the Treasury. The walk from the entrance to the Treasury is 2.1 km (1.3 mi). Glimpses of the facade appear between the rock walls before the canyon opens and the full view comes into sight.
Night visits to the Siq and the Treasury are also possible. Check in advance whether one is running on the date you plan to go.
Colour and light
The stone's colour depends on the light. Early morning gives the best light for photography. As the sun moves across the facade, the sandstone shifts from soft pink to deep red.
Planning the visit
Buy tickets in advance, which the site recommends. The Jordan Pass covers entry to Petra and can also waive the tourist visa fee.
Wear hiking boots or trail runners. The ground mixes old stone paving, loose gravel and soft sand. Carry water and snacks, since prices inside the park rise the further you walk. Some stretches have few places to sit, so plan rest stops along the way.
Around the Treasury
The Treasury is one stop in the wider park. The Monastery, the Temple of Dushares and the Renaissance Tomb are also open to visitors. You may also see archaeologists uncovering and preserving the ruins.
Local Bedouin community members are part of the experience of visiting Petra. Greet them politely, and ask before you photograph them.
