Tokyo International Forum is a glass-and-steel exhibition and concert complex in Marunouchi, close to Tokyo Station and Yurakucho Station. Its signature atrium rises like an elongated ship, with bridges and walkways crossing the open interior. You can enter the public areas without a ticket, look for artworks in the plaza and on the terrace, and sit on upper-floor benches. Exhibitions, concerts and other events bring the halls to life, so check the schedule if you want to attend one.

The central draw is the Forum’s huge glass atrium, an elongated structure framed by steel. From inside, the roof, open space and crossing walkways create changing views as you move between levels. The building can read as a ship from outside, while its interior has been compared to a spacious, futuristic hall.

Architect Rafael Viñoly designed the complex after winning an international competition in 1989. It was built on the former site of Tokyo City Hall, in a central area bordered by major commuter hubs. The Forum opened as a multipurpose venue for exhibitions, performances and conferences.

Walk the public areas

You can explore the common areas without visiting a ticketed event. Look up through the glass roof, follow the bridges and pedestrian ramps, and take time to view the structure from more than one level. The upper floors have benches where you can pause between walks.

Artworks are displayed in the street-level plaza and on the terrace. The public exhibition space and lobby add to the route through the complex. The interior’s light changes across the day, so an early or late visit can give you different conditions for photographs. Tripods may need to be folded away if requested.

Events, exhibitions and the antique market

The Forum hosts concerts, dance and theatre performances, conventions, trade shows, meetings and receptions. Its halls and exhibition areas are used for events, so the building can feel different from one visit to another. Check the event schedule in advance if you want to attend a performance or exhibition; some areas can become busy during events.

An outdoor antique market is held at the Forum twice a month, with a focus on old objects such as prints, ceramics and vintage clothing. The market is reported to take place on the first and third Sundays, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.; check current details before making a special trip. Restaurants and shops are also part of the complex, and there are many dining options nearby in Marunouchi.
