In breve

Naoshima is a good day trip from Okayama or Takamatsu, and a long but doable one from Hiroshima or Osaka. Book your Chichu Art Museum slot online before you choose the day, since timed slots can sell out and online tickets cost less. Take the ferry from Uno in about 20 minutes and avoid Mondays, when most art sites close. Add Teshima only if you stay a night.

Naoshima works as a day trip from Okayama, Takamatsu or Hiroshima, but only if you book the Chichu Art Museum before you choose the day. The island is a 20-minute ferry from Uno, most art sites close on Mondays, and timed slots can sell out online. See also the Naoshima travel guide and the wider Japan trip.

It also helps to know what Naoshima is. It is a small island in the Seto Inland Sea with contemporary art museums, art houses in the old village and a few beaches, and several of the museums were designed by the architect Tadao Ando. It is not a place to tick off in an hour, and it is not a beach holiday either.

Is Naoshima worth a day trip?

Yes, if you care about contemporary art or architecture. The island rewards a slow day: Chichu, half-buried in a hillside, is the reason most people come, and Benesse House and the Lee Ufan Museum add more art in a short walk. The village of Honmura has houses turned into installations, and the ferry rides across the sea are a part of the trip.

Skip it if you would rather see temples, castles or food streets. On a first trip to western Japan, Miyajima and Himeji fit that taste better, and our Hiroshima and Miyajima itinerary shows the first. If you have two days, Naoshima also pairs well with Teshima, which this guide covers below.

How to get to Naoshima

The usual route is through Uno Port. Benesse Art Site lists Okayama Station to Uno Station as about 50 minutes on the JR Uno Line, a walk of about 3 minutes from Uno Station to the port, and Uno to Miyanoura on Naoshima as about 20 minutes by Shikoku Kisen ferry (¥370 for adults). Shikoku Kisen also runs boats from Takamatsu to Miyanoura: about 60 minutes by ferry (¥680) or less by high-speed boat (¥1,590), and the two use different piers at both ends, so check which one your ticket is for. Check the ferry operator's timetable before you go, since sailings change by day.

The Okayama and Takamatsu times come from the Benesse Art Site access page and exclude waiting and walking. From Osaka or Hiroshima, add the shinkansen timetable for your train. The shinkansen to Okayama is the expensive part of the day, so price the tickets before you buy a pass: the JR Pass guide explains how to compare a pass with single tickets.

Do you need to book tickets?

For the main museums, yes. Benesse Art Site sells online tickets for the art facilities on Naoshima, Teshima and Inujima, and online prices are lower than at the gate for most of them. Chichu and Teshima use dated, timed entry with limited capacity, and the site warns that online tickets may sell out.

Prices on the official ticket page: Chichu is ¥2,500 online on weekdays and ¥2,700 on weekends and holidays, or ¥2,800 and ¥3,000 on site. Teshima Art Museum is ¥1,800 online and ¥2,000 on site. Benesse House Museum is ¥1,300 online, Lee Ufan Museum ¥1,200 and the Ando Museum ¥600. Children 15 and under are free at most of these sites, but reservations are still needed for the number of people.

Two extra notes. Chichu is open 10am to 5pm with last admittance at 4pm, and photography is permitted only up to the reception area. Some Art House Project sites in Honmura also need advance tickets (Minamidera and Kinza use set time slots), and the Hiroshi Sugimoto Gallery does too, so check them at the same time. Use the official site for museum entry. The button below is for guided island days and other tickets that you may prefer to a self-guided day.

A one-day route

Aim to reach Miyanoura early enough to cover two legs before your Chichu slot. From the port, the official route is the Naoshima Town Bus (¥100 for adults) to Tsutsuji-so, then the free Benesse Art Site shuttle to Chichu. Leave a generous margin between the ferry and the slot, because you may wait for a bus. Let the timed slot set the day, and fit the rest around it.

Spend the first part of the day at Chichu, and give it unhurried time because last admittance is at 4pm. Have lunch nearby, then use the same free shuttle, which stops at Benesse House Museum and the Lee Ufan Museum on its way back to Tsutsuji-so. Benesse House Museum is open from 8am to 9pm, so it is a flexible stop at either end of the day. Take the Town Bus to Honmura in the afternoon and walk the lanes of the old village between the Art House Project houses; most close by 4:30pm. The Ando Museum there is small.

Head back to Miyanoura with a margin before the ferry you need, and check the timetable on the day since boats can change or cancel in strong wind or fog. Plan to reach Uno or Takamatsu well before your last train. If you are heading west afterward, the Hiroshima guide shows what to see next.

Benesse Art Site says Naoshima is large enough that walking alone is difficult, and names rental bicycles and public minibuses as the main options. Bicycles can be rented in Miyanoura and Honmura. The private area between the East gate near Tsutsuji-so and the North gate near the Lee Ufan Museum is closed to bicycles unless you are a Benesse House guest, so use the free shuttle for that stretch and leave bikes at the parking areas near Tsutsuji-so or the Chichu ticket center. Carry some cash as a backup for small cafés and shops, and see the page on money in Japan for how IC cards work.

Adding Teshima and Inujima

Teshima Art Museum is a separate museum on a different island. It uses timed entry, so you need a second dated ticket (¥1,800 online). It is open 10am to 5pm from March to September and 10am to 4pm from October to February, and it closes on Tuesdays from March to November and Tuesdays to Thursdays from December to February. A high-speed boat runs from Miyanoura through Ieura on Teshima to Inujima, but Benesse Art Site lists only a few departures a day on set days, and the boat does not call at an island whose museum is closed. Check the museum's closing days and the boat timetable together before you commit.

For that reason, trying Naoshima and Teshima in a single day is only realistic if the boat times and both timed tickets line up from an early start. Otherwise, split them over two days, or stay a night on Naoshima. If you plan a longer trip across the region, the Shikoku travel guide and seven-day Shikoku itinerary put Takamatsu and the islands in context.

What to skip

You do not need to see every site. On a single day, Chichu is the priority, followed by one of the Benesse House Museum or the Lee Ufan Museum. The Art House Project in Honmura is best if you enjoy small, quiet installations, and you can skip it if you are short of time. The pumpkin sculptures are quick photo stops, so they should not drive your plan.

Skip Naoshima if you dislike hills, if you travel with small children who cannot manage quiet galleries, or if your plan is packed with other stops. Chichu allows photography only up to the reception area, and it is not a place for a rushed hour. In summer carry water; the seasonal guide explains how the seasons compare across Japan.

If it rains or your slot sells out

Because Chichu does not sell on site once online tickets are gone, a sold-out slot means a different plan, not a gamble at the gate. Look at other days first, since a Monday closing or a holiday can shift availability. If your date is fixed, Benesse House Museum is open year-round from 8am to 9pm and has no timed slot, so it is the natural fallback, and the Honmura Art House Project sites and the Ando Museum are indoor options with their own tickets. Rain does not close the museums, but strong wind or fog can change or cancel boats, so leave margin on the way home and avoid a tight train connection on the mainland.

Day trip or one night?

Choose a day trip if you are in Okayama or Takamatsu already, if you only want Chichu and one or two museums, and if you can be flexible on the ferry. Choose a night if you want a second island, a slow evening and the chance to move your Chichu slot if the weather turns.

Benesse Art Site says accommodation on the island is limited and advises booking in advance, especially around holidays. Options include Benesse House and guesthouses. The mainland alternative is a hotel in Okayama or Takamatsu, where you can leave your bags and take the ferry as a day trip.

Domande frequenti

Can you visit Naoshima as a day trip from Osaka?

Yes, but it is a long day. The route is the shinkansen to Okayama, then the JR Uno Line (about 50 minutes) and the Uno ferry (about 20 minutes), plus waits at each change. Leave early and book your Chichu slot first. Staying in Okayama or Takamatsu makes the day easier.

Do you need to book tickets for Naoshima?

For Chichu Art Museum and Teshima Art Museum, yes: entry is for a set date and time, with limited capacity per slot, and online tickets can sell out. The Chichu page says that if online tickets are sold out there are no on-site sales on the day. Online tickets are cheaper than the gate at most Benesse sites, so book ahead.

How long do you need on Naoshima?

One full day is enough for Chichu, one or two other museums and the village of Honmura if you plan the order around your Chichu slot. Benesse Art Site itself notes that staying overnight lets you see more. Add Teshima on a second day or a night on the island.

Is Naoshima open on Mondays?

Chichu, the Lee Ufan Museum, the Ando Museum and the Art House Project close on Mondays. They open on a Monday that is a national holiday and close the next day instead. Benesse House Museum is listed as open year-round. Check the Benesse calendar for your date before you book the ferry.

Is the JR Pass worth it for Naoshima?

Only if Naoshima sits inside a longer rail loop. A rail pass can cover JR trains such as the Uno Line, but the Uno ferry is run by Shikoku Kisen, a separate operator, so the boat is an extra cost. For a single day trip from Osaka or Hiroshima, price single tickets against a pass before you buy.
