In breve

Stay near Kokusai-dori for a first trip with food and nightlife on foot. Pick Asahibashi or Tomari if you have an early Kerama ferry or a north-coast bus. Omoromachi suits families and car renters. The Yui Rail links all but Tomari to the airport in 11–19 minutes.

How to choose

Naha is Okinawa's capital and the place most trips start and end, so the area you pick is mostly about the next morning: an early Kerama ferry, a bus north, a rental car or a flight to another island. Use this page with the Naha travel guide to settle the base, and see Japan for the rest of the country.

One rail line does most of the work. The Yui Rail monorail runs from Naha Airport through the center to Shuri, and the operator's fare table lists the ride time to each station: 11 minutes to Asahibashi, 13 to the Prefectural Office station (Kencho-mae), 16 to Makishi, 19 to Omoromachi and 27 to Shuri. Check the monorail's timetable for first and last trains before you plan a late arrival or an early departure. Anything close to a station is easy. Anything far from one needs taxis or buses, which is the trade-off in the cheaper corners.

The price bands are rough guides to a night for a double room: $ is a plain business hotel, $$ a newer mid-range or apartment hotel, $$$ a resort-style city hotel. Rates rise in Golden Week (late April to early May), the summer school holidays, Obon (mid August) and New Year, so book those dates first and then the flights and ferries. In typhoon season, prefer a rate you can change or cancel.

Property types are mostly business hotels, apartment hotels and a few capsule and guesthouse options. Traditional ryokan are rare in the city; if you want a big resort with a pool, that is a west-coast decision, not a Naha one.

Which base fits which trip?

Start from the problem you need to solve, not from the neighborhood names.

  • One night before or after a flight: Asahibashi or Kokusai-dori. Both are a short monorail ride from the airport.

  • A Kerama Islands day or overnight: Tomari or Asahibashi, so the ferry terminal is a walk or a short taxi ride away.

  • Four or more nights, mostly in the city: Kokusai-dori, because you will want a different restaurant every evening within walking distance.

  • A rental car for the north of the island: Omoromachi, where roads are wide and parking is easier than in the old center.

  • A rainy-season trip with children: Omoromachi again, for the indoor malls and museums.

Splitting a stay is rarely worth it in Naha. The city is small and the monorail is fast, so a single base covers everything, and the only real reason to move is a ferry or a flight at the start or end of a trip.

Kokusai-dori area, Naha: a beach with people walking on it
Kokusai-dori area, Naha

Kokusai-dori is the main street of central Naha, lined with souvenir shops, izakaya and restaurants that serve Okinawan dishes such as goya champuru and soki soba. Makishi Public Market and the covered lanes around it are a short walk away, which makes this the easiest place to eat well without planning. The street is busy until late on weekends and quiet a few blocks away, so a room on a side street is the sensible pick.

The Yui Rail stations at Kencho-mae, Miebashi and Makishi cover the street. On the operator's table the airport ride is 13 minutes to Kencho-mae, 14 to Miebashi and 16 to Makishi, and the adult fare is ¥290 to Kencho-mae and ¥320 to Miebashi or Makishi. Hotels here are mostly business and apartment types at reasonable rates, and a few capsule options suit solo travelers. It is also the easiest base for Shuri Castle: ride the monorail to Shuri Station, then walk up the hill, since the park describes its grounds as a hilltop with steps and stone-paved paths.

The Shuri Castle main hall was destroyed in the 2019 fire and is being rebuilt. The park has announced that the main hall opens to the public at noon on 23 November 2026, with the park closed all day on 22 November and on the morning of 23 November. From that date a visit inside the hall needs an advance booking for a 30-minute slot, and the paid-area adult fee rises from ¥400 to ¥1,000. Check the Shuri Castle Park official site before you go, because opening details can change.

Evita se you want beach views or a silent night. This is a food street, and weekend noise carries.

2. Asahibashi

Best for
Kerama ferries, buses

Asahibashi

$–$$

Asahibashi is the practical choice. It sits next to the Naha Bus Terminal, where buses to the north coast and the west-coast resorts start, and the monorail reaches the airport in 11 minutes for ¥290. Tomari Port, where the Kerama ferries leave, is a walk or a short taxi ride away, so a morning boat is realistic without an early scramble.

It is quieter after dark than Kokusai-dori, though Kencho-mae and the west end of the main street are a short walk or one stop away. Expect mainly business hotels with fair rates and small rooms. If your plan is two or three days in the Kerama Islands, a night here before and after makes the trip smoother.

The tradeoff is atmosphere. You are near transport rather than near the market, so plan one evening for a monorail ride to Makishi.

Evita se you want a lively street on your doorstep. Asahibashi is calm after office hours.

3. Omoromachi

Best for
Families, car renters, rainy days
Station
Omoromachi
To airport
19 min by Yui Rail
Price band
$$

Omoromachi, in the Shintoshin (new city) district, is newer and wider than old Naha. It has large shopping centers, chain hotels and the Okinawa Prefectural Museum and Art Museum near the station, so it works on a rainy day. Roads are straight and parking is easier than downtown, which is why it suits travelers who collect a rental car here.

The Yui Rail reaches the airport in 19 minutes for ¥320, and Shuri is on the same line a few stops east. Evenings are quieter and more family-oriented, with fewer bars than on Kokusai-dori. The monorail takes you to Makishi for dinner in a few minutes, since the table lists Makishi and Omoromachi only three minutes apart.

Rooms are often a little larger than in older business hotels, and apartment hotels with kitchens are common. That helps for families and longer stays.

Evita se you want old-Naha atmosphere at night. Omoromachi feels like a modern district, not a market town.

4. Tomari

Best for
Early ferries, budget nights
Station

To airport
Walk or taxi to Asahibashi, then 11 min
Price band
$–$$

Tomari is the harbor area, and its main draw is Tomari Port, where the fast ferries to Tokashiki, Zamami and Aka leave. Staying here means you walk to the terminal, which is worth it when the first boat leaves in the morning and you have luggage. There is a local fish market and a scattering of small izakaya near the harbor.

There is no monorail station in the area itself. Asahibashi is the nearest, so the airport run is a short taxi ride or walk plus the 11-minute monorail trip. Hotels are mostly business types with budget rates. For late-night eating and shopping you need to go to Kokusai-dori, which is a reasonable walk or a short taxi ride.

If your priority is Kerama, Tomari is the right base. If not, Asahibashi gives you the same ferry access plus the monorail.

Evita se you rely on the monorail for everything. Tomari has no station, so plan for taxis or a walk to Asahibashi.

Getting around from your base

Naha rewards a simple rule: sleep within a short walk of a monorail station and let the rail line do the long hops. The Yui Rail operator sells a QR 1-day ticket for ¥1,000 (adult) that is valid for 24 hours after purchase, and a 2-day ticket for ¥1,800 valid for 48 hours. Single adult fares on the airport section run from ¥250 to ¥360 up to Shuri, so the 1-day ticket pays for itself after roughly three or four rides. A plain arrival day with one airport ride, or a day on foot around Kokusai-dori, does not need it.

Two details help. A QR one-way ticket is valid only on the day it is bought, so buy it when you travel, not the night before. The operator also sells the OKICA prepaid IC card at its machines, and refunds on it cannot be processed at stations, so treat a card as a small convenience, not a deposit you can recover in town.

Buses fill the gaps the rail line leaves. The Naha Bus Terminal at Asahibashi is the departure point for long routes north, which is why a night in Asahibashi helps if your plan is a bus-led trip. If you plan to rent a car, collect it on the day you leave the city so you do not pay for days you spend walking around Kokusai-dori, where parking is the hardest part of the trip.

Mistakes to avoid when booking Naha

  • Choosing the cheapest room far from a station. A bargain in an outlying district costs a taxi ride every time you go out, and Naha taxis add up on a trip with many short hops.

  • Booking a Kokusai-dori room on the main road. The street is loud late on weekends. Ask for a high floor or a side street.

  • Staying in Naha for a beach trip. The city has a small urban beach, but the beach resorts you picture are on the west coast. If swimming is the goal, read the Okinawa travel guide and base yourself there instead.

  • Arriving on a ferry morning without a plan. Boats to the Kerama Islands can be cancelled in rough seas, and typhoon weather can ground flights as well. Keep a flexible rate for the night before and after any island crossing.

  • Forgetting that Shuri is a half-day, not an hour. The castle grounds are a hilltop with steps and stone paths, and the park lists separate paid and free areas with different hours.

When to book and what to expect by season

Naha is busiest in the months around Golden Week, the summer school holidays and Obon, and again at New Year. Outside those windows you can often book a few weeks ahead and still find a choice of areas. The cooler months suit walking Kokusai-dori and the Shuri hill. In the hot, humid months the indoor options in Omoromachi earn their place, and a hotel with strong air conditioning matters more than a view.

Rain can arrive in any month. A base with a covered walk to the monorail, such as a station-side hotel in Omoromachi or Kencho-mae, makes a wet day easier. From late summer into autumn, watch the forecast for typhoons, and choose a rate that lets you change dates.

From the airport

Naha Airport (OKA) has its own Yui Rail station, so the fastest way into town is the monorail. Check the timetable for the first and last trains of the day. You reach Asahibashi in 11 minutes, Kencho-mae in 13, Makishi in 16 and Omoromachi in 19. Buy a QR ticket at the machine or use a prepaid IC card.

For Tomari, take the monorail to Asahibashi and then walk or take a short taxi. If you land after the last train, a taxi is the only option. Rental car desks are near the airport, with shuttles from the terminal. For a trip that includes Naha then the north, pick the car up on the day you leave the city and pay only for the days you drive.

If your onward plan is another island, a hotel near the monorail is an easy pre-flight night, because the airport is the end of the line. The Ishigaki or Iriomote guide covers the next step. For the wider main island, see the Okinawa travel guide.

Compare cover in travel insurance for Japan and plans in the best eSIM for Japan. Timing matters too: check the best time to visit Japan before you fix dates.

Accommodation tax

Okinawa has announced an accommodation tax that starts for stays from 1 February 2027. The prefecture's page sets it at 2% of the room-only rate per person, per night, with a cap of ¥2,000, and the room rate is counted up to ¥100,000 per night. It is not included in the rates shown on many booking sites, so hotels may collect it at check-in.

The prefecture's page lists exemptions for students on school educational activities and for athletes at sanctioned tournaments, and says lodging operators collect the tax. If your stay crosses that date, compare totals after tax. A cheaper room in a farther area can cost more once the tax and taxis are added.

Domande frequenti

Where is the best area to stay in Naha for first-time visitors?

Kokusai-dori. It puts Makishi Market, izakaya and souvenir shops on foot, and the Yui Rail reaches the airport in 13 to 16 minutes depending on the station. It is loud on weekends, so book a room a street or two off the main road.

Is it better to stay in Naha or near a beach?

For one or two nights, Naha. Beach resorts on the west coast are a long drive away and need a car. Stay in Naha if you have a Kerama ferry, a flight to Ishigaki or a morning at Shuri Castle.

Which area is closest to the Kerama ferries?

Tomari, where Tomari Port is at the edge of the area. Asahibashi is next: a walk or short taxi ride away, and it has the monorail. Both save a rushed early morning.

Do I need a rental car if I stay in Naha?

Not for Naha itself. The Yui Rail, buses and taxis cover the city. Rent a car for the days you drive north to Churaumi Aquarium, and pick it up in Omoromachi or near the airport if you can.

Is there a hotel tax in Naha?

Not yet. Okinawa has announced a 2% accommodation tax per person, per night, capped at ¥2,000, for stays from 1 February 2027. It is charged on the room-only rate, and hotels may collect it at check-in.

Is a Yui Rail day ticket worth it in Naha?

Only on days with three or four rides. The operator sells a QR 1-day ticket for ¥1,000, valid 24 hours from purchase, while single adult fares on the airport section run from ¥250 to ¥360. A day on foot around Kokusai-dori does not need one.

Cronologia degli aggiornamenti

  1. Replaced the placeholder map with a map of the areas, numbered to match the sections.
  2. Expanded from official sources; checked the Yui Rail fare table and ticket page (Okinawa Urban Monorail), the Shuri Castle Park fee, hours and main hall notices (oki-park.jp) and the Okinawa accommodation tax page (Okinawa Prefecture). Replaced rounded airport times with the operator's minutes, removed the unchecked taxi time from Tomari, and added base-by-trip, getting-around and booking-mistakes sections.
  3. Checked the Yui Rail station times and fares (Okinawa Urban Monorail site), the Shuri Castle main hall opening date, advance booking and fee change (Shurijo Castle Park site) and the Okinawa accommodation tax (Okinawa Prefecture site). Corrected the Asahibashi time to 11 minutes; removed unchecked operating hours, train frequency, drive and flight times and the claim that hotel price bands were checked on a date.
