Parrocchia di Santa Maria Formosa

Parrocchia di Santa Maria Formosa stands on Campo Santa Maria Formosa in Venice’s Castello district, near the edge of San Marco.

Parrocchia di Santa Maria Formosa stands on Campo Santa Maria Formosa in Venice’s Castello district, near the edge of San Marco. Mauro Codussi’s late-15th-century church has distinctive façades that mix classical and Baroque elements. Inside, look for works including the Saint Barbara Polyptych, a painting of the Last Supper and art by Jacopo Palma il Vecchio and Giambattista Tiepolo. The church also holds relics of Marina of Antioch in Pisidia. It makes a worthwhile short detour from Venice’s busier sights.

A church in Castello

Santa Maria Formosa stands on the campo of the same name, in Venice’s Castello district near the edge of San Marco. The present church was begun around 1492 by architect Mauro Codussi, on the site of an earlier church. Tradition places the church’s origins much earlier and links its foundation to a vision of the Virgin Mary experienced by St. Magnus, bishop of Oderzo.

The name Formosa is associated with that story. One account says Mary appeared as a beautiful woman and asked for a church to be built in her honour. The building is dedicated to the Purification of the Blessed Virgin.

The church’s exterior combines classical and Baroque elements. Its bell tower rises above the surrounding campo, and a sculpted face on the tower’s base is a striking detail to look for. The building overlooks one of Venice’s larger squares, where the church’s scale and façades are easy to take in from outside.

Santa Maria Formosa is a working place of worship as well as a historic church. Keep your visit respectful, and cover your head when entering.

Artworks and relics inside

Inside, look for the Saint Barbara Polyptych and works associated with painters including Jacopo Palma il Vecchio and Giambattista Tiepolo. A Last Supper painting is another work to seek out. The church also holds relics of Marina of Antioch in Pisidia; ask an attendant whether you can approach them.

The church has a wheelchair-accessible entrance and accessible parking is listed. Tickets are recommended in advance. The entrance is not the doorway beside the canal, so check the approach before setting off.
