Palazzo Cini

Palazzo Cini is a house museum in Venice’s Dorsoduro district, at Campo San Vio.

Palazzo Cini is a house museum in Venice’s Dorsoduro district, at Campo San Vio. Its collection brings together Renaissance paintings and sculpture, with a notable focus on Tuscan works. The displays also have an unusual contrast: religious art occupies one floor, while another presentation explores Casanova’s life in Venice through ink drawings of people around him. The Gothic-style palace has its own long history, formed from two adjoining residences. Take time with the drawings and the smaller objects, including porcelain and ivories.

A house museum in Dorsoduro

Palazzo Cini

Palazzo Cini is in the Dorsoduro district, between Palazzo Balbi Valier and the Rio San Vio. The gallery opened to the public in 1984, presenting part of the art collection assembled by Vittorio Cini, an Italian industrialist, collector and philanthropist. The museum brings art into a residential setting, with paintings, sculpture, furnishings and decorative objects shown within the historic palace.

The collection includes Tuscan paintings and sculpture, along with objects such as porcelain and ivories. Its scope makes it useful to look beyond the larger works: small decorative pieces and the way the rooms are arranged are part of the visit too.

Two residences joined into one palace

The palace took shape through the union of Palazzo Foscari-Loredan and the adjoining Palazzo Grimani. The Foscari residence was built on a site associated with the Giustinian family in the 14th and 15th centuries. The Grimani palace was built in the 16th century for Vincenzo Grimani, of the Santa Maria Formosa branch of the family.

The building’s ownership changed over time. Palazzo Foscari was acquired by Vittorio Cini in 1920, and he joined it to the neighbouring palace. The resulting Gothic-style residence gives the museum a setting with a layered history, distinct from the works displayed inside.

Art and the Casanova displays

The gallery’s rooms create a contrast between religious art and material connected with Casanova’s life in Venice. Among the latter are ink drawings of people in his circle. Give these works a closer look; their subjects offer a more personal focus than the broader collection of paintings and sculpture.

The displays include works from the Renaissance as well as objects and furnishings. The palace’s interior and its art are closely connected, so a visit can take in both the collection and the rooms that house it. The museum is compact, with displays on two floors.
