Choose Sorrento if your plan is Capri, the Amalfi Coast and Pompeii and you want calm evenings and a short boat to the island. Choose Naples if you want the city, the museum, food and fast trains to Rome or Florence. Both reach Pompeii by the same Circumvesuviana line in about 30 to 40 minutes. For five nights or more, a split stay of two Naples nights and three in Sorrento beats either alone.

Sorrento or Naples as a base: the verdict
Choose Sorrento if your plan is Capri, the Amalfi Coast and Pompeii and you want a calm evening to come home to. Choose Naples if you want the city itself, with its archaeological museum, pizza, street life and fast trains to Rome and Florence. Pompeii is about equally easy from both, because the same Circumvesuviana railway serves both ends. The Sorrento travel guide and the Naples travel guide cover each place, and the Italy guide shows where the Bay of Naples fits a longer trip.
The two towns are an hour and a quarter apart by train, so the choice is not about distance. It is about what you want to wake up to and what you plan to do each day. Naples is a large, loud, layered city, and a base there makes the city part of the trip. Sorrento is a smaller resort town on a cliff, with a promenade, lemon groves and boats. The two bases suit different travelers, and a split stay suits many of them best.
A simple rule: with up to three nights and Capri or the coast on the list, sleep in Sorrento. With up to three nights and the city or a train onward on the list, sleep in Naples. With five nights or more, spend two or three in Naples and the rest in Sorrento. The coast itself, from Positano to Amalfi, is a third kind of base, and Positano or Amalfi or Sorrento compares those three.

The table sums up the trade. Naples is the transport hub for the whole region and the better base for a city lover. Sorrento is the better base for boats and the coast.
Pompeii and Herculaneum from each base
The Circumvesuviana runs between Naples and Sorrento, and both ruins are on the line. From Napoli Garibaldi it takes about 15 to 20 minutes to Ercolano Scavi, for Herculaneum, and about 35 to 40 minutes to Pompei Scavi, for Pompeii. From Sorrento, Pompei Scavi is about 30 to 40 minutes the other way, and Ercolano Scavi is farther, about an hour. Trains run roughly every 30 minutes through the day, and the EAV timetable on the day is the final word.
That makes a base in Naples slightly better if you want both ruins, because Herculaneum is a short ride and the order in Naples to Pompeii and Herculaneum starts there. A base in Sorrento is slightly better if you want only Pompeii and a swim afterward. The Campania Express, a reserved-seat tourist service on this line, was reported by Italian press in August 2026 to be suspended from 1 October 2026, so plan on the ordinary trains and read the EAV notice before you travel.
Whichever base you pick, book the Pompeii slot first and plan the train around it, and read Pompeii tickets and how to visit for the rules. A day on the line has the same risks from either end: crowded trains at peak hours, pickpockets and the occasional strike, so keep a margin on the way back.
Capri from each base
Capri is where Sorrento wins most clearly. Boats leave from Marina Piccola and take about 20 to 30 minutes, depending on the operator, so you can leave after breakfast, spend six or seven hours on the island and be home for dinner. From Naples, hydrofoils from Molo Beverello take about 50 minutes, and slower ferries from Calata Porta di Massa take longer, so the same day gives you roughly an hour less on the island. Naples has more departures to choose from, which helps if you want a specific time.
If Capri is the main reason you are on the bay, Sorrento is the base to pick. If it is one day among several, either works, and Naples makes sense when the rest of the trip is in the city. For the plan on the island, see Capri day trip from Naples or Sorrento. Both bases lose the day if the sea is rough and the boats stop, so keep a free day in the plan.
The Amalfi Coast from each base
Sorrento is the better gateway. A coast bus run by SITA Sud links Sorrento, Positano and Amalfi all year, and in the warm months, roughly April to October, seasonal ferries run along the coast. The bus is slow in summer traffic, but it is simple and does not need a booking. See Sorrento to the Amalfi Coast for the options.
From Naples the coast is farther away. You reach it by a train to Salerno and then a bus or boat, or by a seasonal ferry from the Naples port, or by a longer road trip. That is workable for one day but poor for several, so if the coast is your main plan, Sorrento is the better base, and a night on the coast itself is better still.
Trains onward, the airport and the first night
Naples Centrale is on the main line, so fast trains from Rome, Florence and Salerno arrive there, and the Circumvesuviana and the metro are in the same complex. A base in Naples saves the most time on arrival and departure days. To reach Sorrento from Rome you ride a fast train to Naples and then a local train of about an hour, so for a one or two night stay that extra leg is a real cost. For longer stays it matters less. See Italy by train off-peak for how to price the main legs.
From Naples airport, the Alibus shuttle runs to the station area and the port, and Sorrento is farther, roughly an hour and a half to two hours by train, bus or transfer. Plan the airport leg on departure day with a margin, and do not book a morning flight from a Sorrento base without a taxi or transfer arranged. A rule of thumb: if you fly out of Naples early, sleep in Naples the night before.
Evenings, safety and noise
Evenings are the biggest difference in daily life. Naples is loud, late and full of locals, and a base in the old town puts you in a street where people eat at 10pm. Sorrento is calmer and more polished, with a promenade, restaurants for visitors and a mood that quiets after midnight. Light sleepers should ask for a courtyard room in either, but they will struggle more in Naples.
Both places need ordinary city care. Pickpocketing is a known problem on crowded trains and in busy streets, so carry a zipped cross-body bag and keep your phone in a front pocket. Naples demands more attention to bags and streets at night, while Sorrento is easier. If this is your first Italian city trip and you value calm, that alone may decide it.
Cost, tax and what to compare
Neither base is cheap in July and August. Sorrento has many mid-range hotels but charges resort prices in peak weeks, and Naples can be cheaper outside the center. Compare your own dates and look at the total price, including the city tax. Naples lists €4 to €6 per person per night depending on the property type, for up to 14 consecutive nights. Check Sorrento's rate with the property, because it is set locally, and read tourist taxes in Europe for how these charges work.
For a family or a group, a Sorrento hotel with a pool and parking at Sant'Agnello can be better value than two rooms in central Naples. For a solo traveler or a couple on a budget, a guesthouse in Naples often costs less. For the choice of area within each town, see where to stay in Sorrento and where to stay in Naples.
Which to pick for your trip
Pick Sorrento if you have three to four nights, want Capri and the coast and prefer a calm base. Pick Naples if you have two or three nights, want the museum, the food and a train out. Pick a split stay if you have five nights or more: two in Naples for the city and the museum, then three in Sorrento for Capri, the coast and a quiet end to the trip. That order also puts the larger, noisier city first and the relaxing part last.
Avoid the trap of changing hotels more than once. A trip with three bases in five nights wastes a half day each time you pack. If you are unsure, choose one base and add a day trip. Before you go, compare an eSIM for live train and boat times and travel insurance that covers cancelled sailings and medical care. If you plan a longer rail route, read Is a Eurail pass worth it? before you buy a pass.
Domande frequenti
Is it better to stay in Sorrento or Naples?
Sorrento for a resort feel, calm evenings, the short boat to Capri and a base for the Amalfi Coast; Naples for the city, the archaeological museum, food and fast trains to Rome. Both reach Pompeii by the same railway in about 30 to 40 minutes.
Is Sorrento or Naples better for Pompeii?
They are close to equal. From Sorrento the Circumvesuviana takes about 30 to 40 minutes to Pompei Scavi, and from Naples about 35 to 40. Sorrento is better if you want the beach afterward, and Naples if you want to add Herculaneum, which is on the way.
Can you visit Capri from Naples as easily as from Sorrento?
Not quite. Hydrofoils from Naples take about 50 minutes, while boats from Sorrento take roughly 20 to 30 minutes, so Sorrento gives you more time on the island and a later start. Naples has more departures to choose from.
How far apart are Sorrento and Naples?
About an hour and a quarter on the Circumvesuviana, with trains roughly every 30 minutes. A seasonal ferry is faster in good weather. Regional press reported that the Campania Express tourist train stopped from 1 October 2026, so use the ordinary trains and check the EAV timetable.
Is Sorrento more expensive than Naples?
It depends on the season. Sorrento has many mid-range hotels but charges resort prices in July and August, and Naples offers cheaper rooms outside the center. Compare your own dates. Naples lists a city tax of €4 to €6 per person per night.
Where should I stay if I am arriving from Rome by train?
Naples is easier, because fast trains stop at Napoli Centrale and the Circumvesuviana is in the same complex. To reach Sorrento you add a local train of about an hour, so it suits travelers who are staying for several nights and not one.
