Riserva Naturale Orientata dello Zingaro became Sicily’s first nature reserve in 1981. Local protests halted plans to build a highway through the coastal area. The route that was intended for the road became a car-free trail, now winding between bluffs and beaches.

The reserve lies near San Vito Lo Capo, on a shoreline shaped by steep headlands and a series of coves. White-pebble bays meet clear water, and paths lead down from the hiking routes to the coast.

The full route is about 14 kilometres and takes roughly five hours, with moderate difficulty. Expect rocky, uneven ground and changes in elevation along the headlands, so trekking shoes are more useful than ordinary walking shoes.

You can pause at coves for a swim or picnic. The route also passes viewpoints over the shoreline. Around 40 bird species and more than 700 species of flora are found in the reserve.
