Tower of Mariano II

The Tower of Mariano II stands in Piazza Roma, at the end of Oristano’s Corso Umberto I.

The Tower of Mariano II stands in Piazza Roma, at the end of Oristano’s Corso Umberto I. Built in 1290 as part of the city’s defenses, it was the northern gateway through the walls and is the only surviving tower from them. Climb to the upper level for views over the town, and look for the Romanesque stonework and information panels. An audio guide adds context to a short visit; the nearby Arborense Antique Museum helps explain the fortifications before you see the tower.

The tower stands alone in Piazza Roma, at the end of Corso Umberto I. Built in 1290 on the orders of Judge Mariano II d’Arborea, it formed part of Oristano’s defensive system and held one of the city’s main gateways. The northern entrance led into the medieval city of Aristanis, the name from which Oristano developed.

The tower was built by Pisan workers using sandstone blocks from Tharros. Its Romanesque design and local limestone construction give it a solid, restrained appearance. Of the towers that once belonged to Oristano’s walls, this is the only one still standing.

The upper level gives you a view over Oristano. An audio guide explains the tower’s history, while information panels provide another way to follow its story. The narrow spiral staircase is an important practical detail: visitors who prefer not to climb can stay below.

The Arborense Antique Museum is nearby and includes a model of the former fortifications. Seeing it first can help you picture how the tower fitted into the city’s defenses. The tower may close for maintenance, so check ahead before making it the focus of your visit.
