Piazza Vanvitelli is an octagonal square in Vomero, the hilltop district of Naples, where Via Scarlatti and Via Bernini meet. Four Neo-Renaissance buildings frame the space, named for architect Luigi Vanvitelli. It is a useful stop for a stroll or a coffee, with bars, cafés, shops and restaurants around the square. Metro Line 1 and nearby funicular stations connect Vomero with the historic centre and neighbouring districts. In December, lights and a large Christmas tree add a seasonal display.

Piazza Vanvitelli

Piazza Vanvitelli lies in the upper part of Vomero, where Via Scarlatti and Via Bernini cross. The octagonal square took shape in the second half of the 19th century as Vomero developed during Naples’ urban expansion. It is named after Luigi Vanvitelli, the architect whose legacy is associated with the square.

Four Neo-Renaissance buildings frame the space. At its centre is a circular planted area. A granite fountain once stood there; a palm replaced it in the early 20th century, and a later plant took its place after the palm died.

The square serves as a local meeting place, with cafés, bars, shops and restaurants along its edges and nearby streets. Metro Line 1 and funicular stations in the area connect the hilltop district with the historic centre and neighbouring parts of Naples. That makes the piazza a practical starting point for a walk through Vomero or a change of pace between neighbourhoods.

In the evening, decorative lights around nearby venues illuminate the streets and square. During the Christmas season, seasonal lighting and a large tree add another reason to stop here.
