Stay in Centro Storico for a first visit, because the Duomo, the fish market and the Baroque lanes are on foot. Choose Via Etnea for a calmer, greener base, the station and port area only for early trains or a tight budget, and Ognina for sea air and seafood. Ask about noise, and avoid driving into the ZTL.

How to choose
Catania is a working city on Sicily's east coast, built in dark lava stone, with a Baroque center, a fish market and Mount Etna behind it. The Catania travel guide covers what to see, and this page settles where to sleep. For the whole island, the Sicily guide shows how Catania fits with Palermo, Syracuse and Agrigento.
Three things decide the choice. The first is whether you want to be in the lanes or just near them. The center is lively until late, with noise from bars and scooters, and it is the best place for food and walking. The second is how you arrive: trains and long-distance buses stop near the station, while the airport bus serves the center. The third is your transport. If you hire a car, avoid sleeping in the ZTL, because the historic center has limited traffic zones with cameras and a fine can reach you weeks later.
Distances are short. The Duomo, the fish market and Via Etnea are all within a 15-minute walk of each other, and a short metro line serves the station and parts of Via Etnea. For anything farther, buses run. Check the local operators for current routes and fares.
Price bands are relative: $ is a simple room, $$ a mid-range hotel or guesthouse, $$$ an upscale hotel. They show how areas compare, not what you will pay on a given night. Check the tourist tax guide for what a property may add at checkout.
1. Centro Storico
Centro Storico is the Baroque heart of the city, around Piazza del Duomo and the Elephant Fountain, with the fish market a few steps away. Via Crociferi, the Roman theater and many restaurants and bars are within a short walk. It is the base where you can park the luggage, walk out and be eating within minutes.
It suits first visits, short stays and travelers who enjoy a lively street. In the morning the fish market is the best sight in the city, and in the evening the lanes fill with locals. Many guesthouses occupy old palaces, and rooms on upper floors are quieter.
The trade-offs are noise and traffic rules. Lively nights mean music and scooters, so ask for a room away from the street. Cars are restricted in much of the center, and parking is a puzzle, so leave the car in a garage outside the ZTL or skip it. Pickpockets work crowded market streets, so keep bags closed.

Stay here when you want the Duomo and the market on foot.

2. Via Etnea
Via Etnea runs north from the Duomo toward the volcano, lined with shops, cafés and Villa Bellini, a hillside garden. The upper part is greener and calmer than the old lanes, and the long avenue lets you see Etna at the end of the street on clear days. It suits couples and travelers who want a quieter evening.
You are still within walking distance of the center, usually 10 to 20 minutes, and the metro and buses run along the same axis. Restaurants and cafés are plentiful, though fewer are in the style of the old lanes. It is a good base for a stay of three or more nights.
The downside is a slightly less historic feel, and a longer walk to the fish market. If you want the old town at your door, stay closer to the Duomo. If you want a base with easy transport and a garden nearby, Via Etnea is the better pick.

Choose Via Etnea if you stay three nights or more and want easy transport

3. Station and Port
The area around Catania Centrale and the port is a transport hub. Trains to Syracuse, Messina and Taormina leave from here, long-distance buses stop nearby and the metro has a stop at the station. Rooms are among the cheapest in the city, and the walk to the Duomo takes about 15 to 20 minutes.
It makes sense for an early train, a late arrival or a tight budget. You can drop your bags and be at the platform in minutes, and the airport bus runs close by. If Etna or Syracuse is the reason for your stay, the area saves a lot of time.
The trade-off is atmosphere and safety. The streets near the station are rougher after dark, with more pickpocket risk and fewer restaurants than the center. Arrive in daylight, keep valuables secure and take a short taxi to the old town for dinner.

A good pick for a tight train or airport connection, if you arrive in daylight.

4. Ognina
Ognina is a small inlet and harbor on the coast north of the center, with seafood restaurants, a promenade and a rocky shore. It feels like a village inside the city, and the air smells of the sea. It suits travelers who like to walk by water and eat fish.
The center is a bus ride away, usually 20 to 30 minutes, so you trade easy sightseeing for calm. It is a good base for a summer stay, when you want a cooler evening and the sea. The shore is rocky, not sandy, so do not come for a beach.
The weakness is distance from the Duomo and the market. If you plan to spend most days in the old lanes, you will lose time on buses. Check the bus lines and the last evening service before you book.

Worth it if you want Ognina close by and accept the bus to the old town

From the airport to each base
The Alibus is the airport bus, run by the city transit company AMTS. Its site lists a single fare of €4, valid for 90 minutes on the city's AMT lines, and you can buy it on the bus by cash or card, in the app or at partner hotels. The ordinary city ticket and some other passes are not valid on the Alibus, so buy the right one. The ride to the center takes about 30 minutes in normal traffic, longer at rush hour.
For Centro Storico, take the bus to the stop nearest the Duomo and walk, or take a taxi and ask for a fixed fare to your hotel before you set off. For the station area, the same bus is the simplest option. For Via Etnea and Ognina, the bus gets you to the center, and a city bus or taxi takes you the rest of the way; check the AMTS page for the route and the last evening service before you book a room far from the center.
Which base for which trip
A first visit of two or three nights with food at the center of the plan: Centro Storico. You can walk to the Duomo, the fish market and dinner, and you do not need a car. Ask for an upper-floor room away from the street.
A longer stay with several day trips by train: the station area, or Via Etnea if you want a quieter street and can use the metro. Day trips to Syracuse, Taormina and Etna start from the station or the bus stops near it, so a base here shortens your mornings.
A summer stay with sea air and slower evenings: Ognina. Plan on buses into the center and accept that you will not walk to the market every day.
A stay timed with the Feast of Saint Agatha in early February, Easter or a summer weekend: book as soon as your dates are firm, and prefer a flexible rate, since the center fills and street access changes during processions.
Who should not stay in the center
Light sleepers, travelers who need a parking space at the door and anyone who dislikes crowded lanes after dark should look at Via Etnea or Ognina instead. If you arrive late and are unsure of the area, a small hotel on Via Etnea or in the center is a safer first night than a cheap room near the port. If you plan to drive to Etna and Syracuse on three different days, sleep outside the ZTL, where a car can be left in a garage, rather than paying to park in a puzzle of one-way streets.
Mistakes to avoid
Driving into the historic center with a rental car. The limited traffic zones use cameras, and a fine can reach you through the rental company after you are home. Ask the hotel before you arrive, and use a garage outside the zone if you need one.
Booking the cheapest room near the station without checking the street. The area is practical, but rougher after dark, so look at recent guest comments and plan to take a short taxi for dinner.
Choosing Ognina and expecting a beach. The shore is rocky, and the point of the area is calm and seafood, not swimming from the hotel.
Underestimating heat. July and August are hot, and a room without air conditioning is a poor bargain. Check that the room has it, and ask about noise from the street.
Booking tips
Book as soon as your dates are firm for Easter, May and September, and for the Feast of Saint Agatha in early February, when the city fills for processions. July and August are hot and the city is busier with beach-goers. If you can travel in spring or autumn, rates are lower and the weather is better for walking.
Ask the property about noise, parking and how to reach it from the airport bus. If you plan to hire a car for Etna or Syracuse, pick it up on the day you leave Catania and not before. See our Etna day trip guide for the bus and tour options, and the comparison of Catania, Taormina and Syracuse if you are still choosing a base.
Before you go, compare an eSIM for data on landing, and a travel insurance policy that covers hiking on Etna and medical care. For rail planning across Italy, read Is a Eurail pass worth it?, since Sicilian trains often cost less as point-to-point tickets.
Domande frequenti
What is the best area to stay in Catania for the first time?
Centro Storico, for most first visits. The Duomo, the fish market, Via Crociferi and many restaurants are on foot. Via Etnea is the better pick if you want a calmer street and a longer shopping avenue.
Is it safe to stay near Catania station?
It is practical but rougher after dark, with more pickpocket risk than the center. It suits early trains and a tight budget. Arrive in daylight, keep valuables close and take a short taxi if you land late.
Should I stay in Catania or Taormina?
Catania for food, trains and a real city at lower prices. Taormina for views, beaches and a polished resort feel at higher cost. Many visitors sleep in Catania and take the train to Taormina for a day.
How do I get from Catania airport to my hotel?
The Alibus airport bus runs to the center and costs €4 on the AMTS site, valid for 90 minutes on city lines; normal city tickets are not valid on it. Taxis are quicker but cost more. Check AMTS for current stops and the last service, and allow extra time in traffic.
Can I bring a car to a Catania hotel?
Ask first. Parts of the historic center are a limited traffic zone with cameras, and a fine can follow you to your rental company. Many hotels will register a plate or point you to a garage outside the zone.
