Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore

The Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore stands on Piazza Duomo in Bergamo's upper town, Città Alta.

The Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore stands on Piazza Duomo in Bergamo's upper town, Città Alta. From outside it is a plain Romanesque building of brick, with no central front entrance. Step inside and the mood changes: gilded Baroque decoration covers the walls and ceilings, with frescoes, stucco, tapestries and carved wood. The choir stalls are inlaid to designs linked to Lorenzo Lotto, and the composer Gaetano Donizetti is buried here. Give yourself time to look closely, since much of the detail is easy to miss on a quick visit.

A church built after a vow

According to popular tradition, the people of Bergamo promised the Virgin Mary a church if the city was spared from a plague. Construction began in 1137, and the basilica was built in stages over the following centuries.

Later, the interior was redecorated in the Baroque style. This is why the building looks plain from outside and rich inside. The basilica is considered the most important church in the city.

The exterior and its entrances

The basilica has no central entrance and no main facade. It was built next to the old palace, so its doors sit on the sides. Four side entrances lead in, and red and white marble lions guard them.

The porch on the left side, by Giovanni da Campione, dates from the fourteenth century. Its columns rest on lions, and its frieze shows hunting scenes.

Inside the basilica

Gilded stucco, frescoes and carved wood cover the interior. Large tapestries hang on the walls, some of them Flemish work added in the sixteenth century, and they can make the space feel like the hall of a medieval castle. The interior is built around an octagonal dome.

The choir stalls have wood inlay based on designs by Lorenzo Lotto. A wooden confessional carved by Andrea Fantoni in 1705 is one of the more unusual details. Look up at the gilded ceiling paintings and find the painting known as The Tree of Life.

Gaetano Donizetti's tomb

Gaetano Donizetti, a popular opera composer, was born in Bergamo in 1797. He is buried in the basilica in a marble tomb as elaborate as the rest of the decoration.

The Donizetti Museum in the city covers his life. An annual festival in his honour takes place in November and December.
