Old City
Luogo simbolo

Kota Lama Semarang

Kota Lama is Semarang's old town, a district of about 31 hectares on the northern coast of Central Java.

Kota Lama is Semarang's old town, a district of about 31 hectares on the northern coast of Central Java. Its Dutch colonial buildings, cobbled streets and vintage lamp posts give the area a calm, European look, and many of the old buildings are still in use. Walk the lanes at your own pace, step into Blenduk Church, and look for cafes and galleries behind the old facades. Go early or late in the day to avoid the heat.

From trading post to Little Netherlands

Kota Lama Semarang
Kota Lama Semarang

Kota Lama covers about 31 hectares on Semarang's northern coast. During the 19th and 20th centuries it was the city's commercial center, and the Dutch built Vijfhoek Fort here to keep trade moving. Traders from China and Arabia also worked in the district alongside the Dutch. The area earned the nickname Little Netherlands because of its European look, its defensive canals and its buildings.

The district is no longer the city's trading center. Conservation work has restored many old buildings, and some now house upscale bistros and restaurants. A former open field near the railway station now holds a reservoir that is part of the city's flood control.

Blenduk Church

Kota Lama Semarang

Gereja Blenduk is a domed Protestant church dating to 1753. It is often described as the oldest Protestant church in Central Java, and it is among the best-known landmarks in the district.

The church is still an active place of worship. Dress modestly, keep your voice low inside, and avoid photographing people during services. Opening times can sometimes run late or start late, so allow some flexibility in your plans.

Buildings and streets to look for

Most of the architecture is Dutch colonial, with Art Deco and Neo-Classical touches. Look up at the facades, the upper floors and the details above the doorways, and notice the cobbled lanes and the vintage lamp posts.

Other buildings named in the material include the old post office, the Marabunta building, the old cigarette factory, Jembatan Berok and the Gereja Ayam. Taman Srigunting is a small green space close to the district. The Semarang Contemporary Art Gallery is also in Kota Lama, housed in a colonial-style building, so a gallery visit fits well into a walk.

Getting there and getting around

Ride-hailing apps such as Gojek, Maxim and Grab can take you to the district. The best drop-off point mentioned is in front of Pringsewu restaurant, and the main sights are within walking distance from there. The address is on Jalan Letjen Suprapto in Tanjung Mas.

Buses can also drop you nearby, at the Pasar Johar, Damri and Tawang stops. Tawang Station is about a ten-minute motorbike ride away.

Eating, drinking and buying

Cafes in the district vary widely in price. Drink prices range from about 20,000 rupiah to more than 500,000 rupiah, so check the menu before you order.

For souvenirs, Rumah Pohan is an antique market in the area, and the Semarang contemporary museum is another place to browse. Antiques here are priced high, so compare before you buy.
