In breve

Stay in Menteng for a first visit: leafy streets, cafés and the main sights within a short ride. Choose Sudirman and Thamrin to live on the MRT line and near malls, Kota Tua only for early sightseeing, Kemang for dining and nights out, and an airport hotel for a late flight or a dawn departure. Traffic matters more than distance, so base where you will actually move.

How to choose

Jakarta is a very large city where traffic can double a journey, so the base you choose matters more than the distance on the map. The Jakarta travel guide covers the sights, and this page settles where to sleep. For the wider picture of the country, see the Indonesia guide.

Three questions narrow the choice. Do you plan to use the MRT and commuter trains, or ride-hailing cars? Do you want quiet streets and cafés, or malls and towers at the door? And are you here for a night, a long weekend or a base for trips to Java? Rail beats the road at rush hour, so a base near a station saves time every day.

Prices are shown as relative bands: $ for budget, $$ for mid-range and $$$ for upscale. They compare areas with each other rather than quote nightly rates. The calendar moves them more than the area: public holidays, big events and the weeks around Eid fill rooms and flights, so book earlier for those dates.

I numeri corrispondono alle sezioni qui sotto.

1. Menteng

Best for
First visits, couples, culture
Transit
Short ride to MRT and Gambir station
To airport
About 1 hr by airport train and ride, more in traffic
Price band
$$–$$$

Menteng is the leafy, central district with colonial-era villas, tree-lined streets, cafés and boutique hotels. It sits close to the National Monument, the Istiqlal Mosque and Jakarta Cathedral, and Gambir station, which handles long-distance trains. It is the calmest part of the city center, and the one where you are most likely to enjoy a walk.

It is not on the MRT line, so you will take a short ride by app to reach the stations or the malls along Sudirman. That is rarely a problem, because the roads in the area are quieter than the main avenues, but rush hour can make even a short ride slow. Menteng is a good base for couples, culture lovers and anyone who wants a gentle start to a trip across Java.

If you plan to see museums and the Old Town, Menteng works well. Our Jakarta in 2 days route starts here. Prices are mid-range to upscale, and the choice leans to small hotels rather than towers.

Evita se you want towers, malls and the MRT at your door. Sudirman and Thamrin suits you better.

For a gentle start in Menteng, this one is half a kilometre from the centre

2. Sudirman and Thamrin

Best for
Short stays, business, rail users
Transit
On the MRT line
To airport
About 1 hr by airport train, then a short ride
Price band
$$–$$$

Sudirman and Thamrin are the avenues that form the city's business spine, lined with towers, hotels and large malls. The MRT runs along this axis, and the airport train links Soekarno-Hatta with the area, so it is the easiest base if you plan to use rail. Restaurants, rooftop bars and food courts are on your doorstep.

Jakarta Cathedral, Jakarta: a large cathedral with two spires on top of it
Jakarta Cathedral, Jakarta

The area is built for offices, so it can feel quiet on weekends and in the evening after the workday. It is less characterful than Menteng, and street life is limited, but for a one- or two-night stay it saves time. If you arrive by train from the airport, a hotel near the station reduces the last ride to a short walk.

Choose this area for short stays, business trips and travelers who want to cut transfer time. It is a good base for a layover day, since you can reach several sights by rail and return easily.

Evita se you want old buildings and street life. Menteng or Kota Tua suits you better.

For a five-star stay close to Sudirman and Thamrin, this is one to consider

3. Kota Tua

Best for
Early museum visits, photographers
Transit
Jakarta Kota station nearby
To airport
About 1–1.5 hrs by road, more in traffic
Price band
$–$$

Kota Tua is the old Dutch-era quarter, with Fatahillah Square, the Jakarta History Museum and the harbor of Sunda Kelapa not far away. A few hotels sit in or near the square, and staying here means you can see the square in the early morning light before the heat and the crowds.

The trade-offs are practical. There are few hotels and restaurants compared with the center, the area is quiet after dark and midday traffic is heavy. It is also farther from the main business and shopping districts. For most visitors, staying in Menteng or Sudirman and visiting Kota Tua in the morning is the better plan.

Choose Kota Tua if sightseeing is the point and you want an early start, or if you are interested in photography and history. Skip it if you want nightlife, malls or a range of dining.

Evita se you want nightlife, malls or an easy MRT ride. Menteng or Sudirman suits you better.

Choose Kota Tua if sightseeing is the point and you want an early start.

4. Kemang

Best for
Food, nights out, longer stays
Transit
No rail; ride-hailing
To airport
About 1.5 hrs by road, more in traffic
Price band
$$

Kemang is a district in South Jakarta known for restaurants, bars, live music and a casual, expat-friendly mood. If your trip is built around dining and evenings out, it has more choice than the business districts, and rooms are usually mid-priced. Many longer-stay visitors choose serviced apartments here.

The problem is traffic. Kemang has no rail line, and the roads fill at rush hour, so a ride to the Old Town or the center can take much longer than the map suggests. The area also has little sightseeing of its own. It works best if you have a driver, or you plan to spend most evenings locally.

Choose Kemang for food and nightlife and a more residential feel. Skip it if you plan to ride the MRT or want to be near the main museums.

Evita se you plan to sightsee by rail. Menteng or Sudirman suits you better.

5. Near Soekarno-Hatta Airport

Best for
Layovers, dawn departures
Transit
Shuttle or airport train
To airport
5–15 min by shuttle or train link
Price band
$–$$

Hotels near Soekarno-Hatta Airport are for people who do not want to spend a night in traffic. They suit a late arrival, a dawn departure, or a layover where the next flight leaves the next morning. Many offer shuttles, and prices are often lower than in the center for the same standard of room.

There is nothing to see nearby, and the trip into town takes about an hour or more, so staying here is a decision about logistics. If you have a full day free, base in the city and take the airport train or a car to the airport.

Choose this area only if the flight is the priority. A single night here before an early flight is easier than a long ride from the center at 4am, but for more than one night, stay in the city.

Evita se you have more than one night, or want to see the city. Menteng or Sudirman suits you better.

For an early flight, this is close to the airport area

Which base suits which trip?

Match the base to the trip you are taking. A first visit with museums and the Old Town fits Menteng. A short business trip or a layover day fits Sudirman and Thamrin. A history-focused morning fits Kota Tua, but sleep in the center. A food-led stay fits Kemang, and a late flight fits the airport. If you are using Jakarta as a base for the Thousand Islands or Bandung, choose a base near a station and plan for rush-hour delays.

Jakarta War Cemetery, Jakarta

If you are combining Jakarta with other stops, check where your next train or flight leaves. A hotel near a station can save an hour on departure day, and traffic in the city is the main risk for a tight connection. Read is Jakarta worth visiting if you are deciding how many nights to give the city.

What should you check before you book?

A few checks save a lot of trouble in Jakarta. Ask how far the hotel is from the nearest MRT or train station, and whether the pavement is walkable, because many streets have uneven or missing sidewalks. Look at the street on a map and read recent reviews for notes on noise and traffic. If you are arriving late, ask whether the hotel can arrange an airport pickup, and confirm the price before you leave the terminal.

Ask what the breakfast includes, whether there is a pool or gym, and what the check-in and check-out times are. If you are working, ask about the Wi-Fi speed, and whether there is a quiet place to take a call. Finally, check the cancellation terms, since flights and plans change, and a refundable rate is worth a small premium.

Booking tips

Book early for public holidays, large events and the weeks around Eid, when rooms and flights fill. Outside those periods you can often choose a few days ahead, and a flexible rate costs little extra. Check what the rate includes, such as breakfast and airport transfers, and whether the hotel adds taxes and service charges to the displayed price.

Check the location with a map rather than the district name, because Jakarta's districts are large and a "central" hotel may be a long ride from the sights. Look at how far the hotel is from the nearest MRT or train station, and whether the street has heavy traffic at rush hour. Ask whether the hotel can arrange a driver for day trips.

Before you go, add an eSIM so that ride apps work from the arrivals hall, and check travel insurance for cover that includes delays and illness. Our getting around Indonesia page covers trains and flights between cities, and the Bali tourist levy and e-VoA page explains the entry steps if you continue to Bali.

Domande frequenti

What is the best area to stay in Jakarta for tourists?

Menteng for most first visits. It has tree-lined streets, cafés and boutique hotels, it is close to the Monas area and the mosque and cathedral, and the MRT is a short ride away. Sudirman and Thamrin suit people who want to ride the MRT.

Is it better to stay in Kota Tua or central Jakarta?

Central Jakarta for most trips, because Kota Tua has few hotels, quiet evenings and heavy midday traffic. Stay there only if you want to be at Fatahillah Square at opening time, or visit it for a morning from Menteng.

Where should I stay in Jakarta for one night?

Near the airport if you have a late arrival or a dawn flight, or in Menteng or Sudirman if you want an evening in the city. The airport train can link Soekarno-Hatta to the center, so a central base works if you plan the timing.

Do I need a car in Jakarta?

Not usually. The MRT, commuter trains and ride-hailing cover most trips, and traffic can make a car slower than rail. A driver is useful for a long day across the city, or a trip to Bogor.

When should I book a hotel in Jakarta?

Book early for public holidays, big events and the weeks around Eid, when rooms and flights fill. Outside those periods you can often choose a few days ahead.
