From Bali, the fast boat is the simplest way to reach Gili Trawangan in one move, usually in roughly 1.5 to 2.5 hours. From Lombok, the public boat from Bangsal is short and cheap. Book a refundable ticket, arrive at the harbor early, and keep a spare day before any flight home, because rough seas can cancel boats.
What are the ways to reach Gili Trawangan?
Gili Trawangan has no airport and no cars, so every trip ends with a boat. The question is where you start. This page, a companion to the Gili Trawangan travel guide, sets out the main routes from Bali and Lombok and what to check before you pay. If you are still deciding which island to visit, see the Indonesia guide and the comparison of Gili T, Air or Meno.
There are three ordinary routes. A fast boat from Bali goes straight to the island and suits most visitors. A flight to Lombok followed by a road transfer and a short public boat from Bangsal suits travelers who are already on Lombok or who prefer to avoid the open sea crossing. A slow ferry from Bali to Lombok, then road and boat, is the cheapest and longest option.

The times in the table are typical ranges, not quotes, so confirm them with the operator. For a first trip from Bali, the fast boat is almost always the simplest choice.
How do you get there from Bali?
Fast boats run from several Bali harbors, including Padangbai on the east coast and Sanur and Serangan in the south, to Gili Trawangan and often on to Gili Meno or Gili Air. The departure port and the time depend on the operator and the season, so check your ticket rather than assuming. Many tickets include a hotel pickup in southern Bali, which helps, but ask what time you are collected, because it can be early.
Arrive at the harbor at the time on your ticket, which is usually well before departure. Check-in desks tag your luggage, and boats board in groups. Expect a crowded dock, a hot wait and, on some boats, a wet landing at the other end. Wear sandals you can walk in, and keep your phone and passport in a dry bag.
Check which island the boat serves. Many fast boats call at Gili Trawangan first, and some continue to the other islands, while others stop only there. If you are heading to Gili Meno or Gili Air, ask where the boat will drop you, and plan a short hop by public boat if needed. Our guide to Gili Meno explains the quieter option.
Arriving through Bali also means paying Bali's entry costs. See the Bali tourist levy and e-VoA page before you fly, so that you are not sorting visas on the harbor dock.

How do you get there from Lombok?
From Lombok the crossing is short. Public boats leave from Bangsal harbor in the northwest and cross to Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno and Gili Air, usually in under an hour. Boats leave when they have enough passengers, so expect to wait, and carry cash for the ticket. Private boats are also available at the harbor if you prefer to leave at once, but they cost more.
If you fly into Lombok International Airport at Praya, the road to Bangsal takes roughly 1.5 to 2 hours depending on traffic. You can hire a car with a driver or book a transfer that includes the boat. From Mataram or Senggigi, the road to Bangsal is shorter. Our Lombok guide covers the mainland and what else is worth the trip.
If your flights are tight, think about how many hours the transfer will take. Landing at the airport in the afternoon and trying to catch the last public boat can be risky, and a night in Senggigi or near Bangsal is often easier than rushing. Our getting around Indonesia page covers flights and ferries across the islands.
How should you book your boat ticket?
Decide what matters first: price, speed or flexibility. Then compare operators on the same points: departure port, departure time, whether hotel pickup is included, how many passengers the boat carries, whether it has life jackets for everyone and what happens if the trip is canceled. Read recent reviews for the specific operator, and avoid tickets that give no detail about the boat.
Book ahead for July and August, the end-of-year holidays and any long weekend, when popular departures sell out. If you can, take a morning boat, since sea conditions are often calmer before the afternoon wind. Keep your booking confirmation on your phone and a screenshot offline, because signal at the dock can be patchy. An eSIM helps you check times and messages as you travel.
Be cautious of very cheap tickets from street sellers, and of anyone who offers a "special" price at the harbor. Use the operator's own counter or a booking page you trust, and keep the receipt. Pay with a card or a platform that offers a refund policy where you can.
What if the sea is rough?
Rough seas are the main risk on this route. Strong wind and swell can delay or cancel fast boats, especially in the wet months, and sometimes in the middle of the dry season. A delayed boat can mean a long wait on the dock, and a canceled one can mean a night in Bali or Lombok.
Plan for it. Choose a refundable or changeable ticket, and leave a spare day before any flight home. Ask your hotel on the island what they know about the day's conditions, and check with the operator the evening before. If you are prone to sea sickness, take a tablet before you board, sit near the middle of the boat and look at the horizon.
Check your travel insurance for cover that includes boat delays and missed connections. Policies differ on weather exclusions, so read the terms before you buy, and keep receipts for any extra night you pay for.
Which route suits which traveler?
Match the route to your trip rather than to the cheapest fare. If you are coming from southern Bali with a few days to spare, the fast boat is the simplest, and a hotel pickup removes the need to find the harbor. If you are already on Lombok, perhaps after Rinjani or a stay in Senggigi, the road to Bangsal and a public boat is shorter and cheaper. If you are flying into Lombok from Jakarta or elsewhere, a driver from the airport to Bangsal, then a boat, avoids the open crossing from Bali altogether.
Families with small children and travelers who are nervous at sea may prefer the shortest crossing, which is from Bangsal. Travelers with a lot of luggage should check how it is handled on each boat, and whether the hotel will send a cart. Budget travelers can save by taking public routes, but they should add a buffer for delays and carry cash for each leg.
What should you know when you arrive?
Arrival on Gili Trawangan is simple but not always dry. Some boats land you at a jetty, and others drop passengers in shallow water, so wear sandals you can walk in and keep valuables in a dry bag. Porters and cidomo drivers wait at the harbor. Agree the price of a cart before you load your bags, and ask your hotel to recommend a fair fare.
Have rupiah in cash for the cart, the first meal and small purchases, because ATMs on the island can run out. Check your hotel's check-in time, and tell them if your boat is late. Refill your water bottle at a refill station rather than buying plastic bottles, and remember that tap water is brackish. Our guide on where to stay on Gili Trawangan explains how far each area is from the harbor, which matters when you arrive with luggage.
How do you leave the island?
Leaving works the same way in reverse. Reconfirm your boat the day before, and ask your hotel to arrange a cidomo cart to the harbor if you have luggage. Arrive early, and keep your documents handy. If your boat is delayed, have a plan for onward transport, and do not book a tight connection on the same day.
For a flight home from Bali, aim to be back on the mainland at least a day early. For a flight from Lombok, allow a few hours for the road. If you are staying a night in Bali or Lombok on the way out, choose a hotel near the harbor or the airport, and see our guide on where to stay on Gili Trawangan for the island end of the trip.
